Nautilus Puzzles are beautiful, complex, wooden puzzles. They come in all sizes (from 10 to 1000) and have a gorgeous variety of images, including photographic, illustration, and fine art. There are puzzles for all ages and all seasons, so they would make beautiful gifts, as well.
What’s in the box?
Nautilus Puzzles come in a beautiful box that’s gift-worthy itself. You wouldn’t even need to wrap it, except that it shows the puzzle image on the cover. Inside is a frameable print of the puzzle image, as well as a satin sack full of the puzzle pieces. The puzzle pieces are about twice the thickness of a standard cardboard puzzle piece. The pieces are nothing like standard puzzle pieces, though. There special pieces that are the shape of items that match the theme and there are even mini puzzles within the pieces, forming a themed shape within the puzzle. The rest of the pieces are shaped like chaos, but the pieces edges are crisp and fit well together.
How to solve a Nautilus Wooden Puzzle:
The puzzle I solved is the Year of the Horse. It looks like a plate with separate edge and center. It’s round and has several different motifs within the puzzle (one for each section of the plate). Sorting is definitely an option, though there are enough color similarities across the motifs and shapes that the puzzle is not simple. The piece edges can be rounded or squared off or even sharp points, so be prepared to focus on the puzzle. I had the TV on in the background, but couldn’t follow it, because I needed all my attention on the puzzle.
I solved the edge first (of course – that’s my style), then I picked out individual elements and put them together as much as I could. Because the pieces do not have uniform shapes or sizes, Nautilus Puzzles are very complicated. I tried to save the special pieces for the end, but it would have been very difficult to solve the puzzle without them.
TOP TIP: Some pieces are thinner than my pinky finger, so multiple pieces can fit in the space of a standard piece, so you have to pay very close attention to the shapes around the edges.
Nautilus Puzzles are challenging and fun and so satisfying to solve. The Nautilus catalog is full of gorgeous designs, including seasonal puzzles, like the Easter egg puzzle we shared on Instagram, single images, collages, and more. You can choose by color, image, or theme. And the variety extends across all puzzle sizes. There is a Nautilus Puzzle for everyone. The Year of the Horse puzzle is 300 pieces and 14” in diameter. It took about 4 hours to complete, across a few sessions. It was fun, challenging, and I’ve already picked out several more from the Nautilus collection that I want to solve in future.
