Survivor fans! Exploding Kittens has created ANOTHER board game of Survivor! This one is Let’s Go to Rocks! Survivor 50 premieres tonight and we now have two Survivor game options. Time for game night with all your Survivor friends. We recently review Survivor: The Tribe Has Spoken and we recommend getting both games.
What’s in the box?
Survivor: Let’s Go to Rocks includes Challenge cards, all new Survivor character cards, 10 grey rocks, three purple rocks; a bag; a Survival Guide, the rules, and an immunity necklace(!). Just like the Survivor: The Tribe Has Spoken game, there isn’t a game board, so you can play on almost any surface. Just like the Survivor game, the character cards are of actual Survivor players, winners and fan favorites, and they’re all different from the character cards in Survivor: The Tribe Has Spoken, but they are the same six colors, with two Survivor players for each color.
How to play Survivor: Let’s Go to Rocks:
Setting up the game area is easy. Each player picks their color, and places their Survivor players face up on the table in front of them. Any Survivor: Let’s Go to Rocks character cards that aren’t chosen for tribes get set aside (they won’t be part of the game). Shuffle the purple Challenge cards and put them face down in the play area. Put the rocks, bag, and Immunity necklace in the playing area near the Challenge cards.
TOP TIP: Keep the Survival Guide handy, because it helps explain the rules of each type of Challenge.
The first player flips the top Challenge card over. If they win the Challenge, they get the Immunity necklace AND they get to pick a player to vote out one of their tribemates (by flipping the Survivor player card over). Don’t get too excited about the Immunity necklace, though. It only protects you during your own turn, if you win the challenge. The winner of each Challenge gets to flip the next Challenge card over. If one player continues to win challenges (we’ve all seen it happen), they retain the Immunity necklace and the power to decide which tribe eliminates players. Any player that loses both of their Survivor players is eliminated from winning, but can continue to play challenges and, if they win Challenges, they still have the power to eliminate other tribes.
How to Win Survivor: Let’s Go to Rocks:
First, how to win the Challenges. There are five different types of Challenges: 1 Now or 2 Later; Hide ‘n’ Seek; Highest Bidder (Survivor Auction, I guess, but it’s not as fun); Pull or Steal; and Lowest Score Loses. Each Challenge includes all players, whether or not they’ve been eliminated. And losing a Challenge doesn’t mean you lose the game, unless you’re the player the winner chooses to eliminate tribemates and you’re down to your last Survivor player.
The only way to win Survivor: Let’s Go to Rocks is to outwit, outplay, and outlast your opponents. The winner is the player who still has one tribemate left with every other tribe on the board eliminated. Simple, right? But, oh, so complicated! There’s no jury management, but you do have to be mindful of which tribe you choose to eliminate a player when you win a Challenge or you’ll end up getting eliminated yourself.
The Best Part
Both Survivor games can be combined! You set up for Survivor: The Tribe Has Spoken, add in the orange Challenge cards from Survivor: Let’s Go to Rocks, and follow the rules in the Survival Guides. Let me know if you want a review of the combined gameplay.
Survivor: Let’s Go to Rocks is fun, fast, and easy to play. Like Survivor: The Tribe Has Spoken it has dynamic action, both in the gameplay and the tribe elimination aspect. Be sure you’re playing with people who won’t take it too seriously if they’re eliminated (i.e., this may not be a good game to play with your littles). The instructions and survival guide are great, but if you’re learn-by-doing person, you can scan the QR code on the rule book to watch a video of the game in play. Survivor: Let’s Go to Rocks is for 2-6 players and the recommended age range is 8+. Games last about 20 minutes, so Survivor: Let’s Go to Rocks is great for game night. You could even play this on the road.
