It’s January and that means it’s National Puzzle month! We’ll be reviewing puzzles all month long. We’re starting out with a Gay NYC Dad favorite: Ravensburger. If you haven’t seen Ravensburger’s Jigsaw puzzle advent calendar yet, check out my review here and you’ll understand why we love them so much: https://www.gaynycdad.com/2025/12/christmas-around-the-world.html..
As with everything Ravensburger does, this puzzle is stunning. It’s a collage of instant photos (think Polaroid) of Disney classic characters, ranging from Walt Disney’s first princess, Snow White, all the way through Rapunzel, and including five of the Sensational Six. Pluto must have been in the doghouse that day. The puzzle pieces are sturdy and fit together perfectly.
You might think that having photographs of characters would make this puzzle easy, but it is still challenging. While you might be able to sort by character for some of the pieces, the photo frames will slow you down. From the color schemes to the picture framing, plus the scattered effect of the images, this puzzle was so fun to put together. And, yes, I did save Snow White to complete last, because she’s my favorite. And, yes, I had non Snow White pieces in the pieces that I had separated, so even with her distinctive animation style, it wasn’t easy to sort the frame portions of her section.
Ravensburger values sustainability and Disney Portraits is made with a minimum of 70% recycled materials. The completed puzzle is 500 1” pieces and is 49cm x 36 cm (a little over 19” x 14”). Time-wise, it took 2 ½ to 3 hours to complete over 3 different puzzling sessions. Ravensburger has a wide range of puzzle images, including a serious Disney collection, including puzzles from across the Disney universe, including Marvel and Star Wars. They even have puzzles from their Disney Villanous line of games. There is no age range for this puzzle, but it is marked as “for adults” on the Ravensburger website.

How challenging is this puzzle really for a casual puzzler, and would it still be enjoyable if I usually prefer more traditional scene-based puzzles rather than collage-style designs?
