Olive My Pickle Review!
My family has always served a relish tray with our big holiday meals at Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. If you’re wondering a relish tray is, I will describe ours, but I’m sure many families have their own versions. Ours is a serving plate (we have a special glass dish that’s divided into smaller sections) filled with small nibbly things, almost always carrots, celery, gherkins, and/or marinated artichoke hearts, but always green and/or black olives.
I am an olive lover. I eat olives nearly every day. When I discovered Olive My Pickle, I was excited, because they are truly passionate about olives. Olive My Pickle was started by Shai and Charlotte to further their mission of promoting probiotic fermented foods. They have honed their small-batch fermentations to near perfection. And it’s not just pickles and olives. They have a huge variety of fermented vegetables, including sauerkraut, kimchi, vegetables, and even hot sauce!
For this review, we are focusing on olives. Olive My Pickle sent me three bags of olives: Pitted Butter Olives; Greek Olive Mix; and Garlic-stuffed Olives. This review will cover all three.
Pitted Butter Olives are green Castelvetrano olives about the size of a quail’s egg. Castelvetrano olives come from Sicily and have a mild, buttery flavor and texture. They are bright green, so perfect for relish trays. Olive My Pickle’s Pitted Butter Olives are firm and delicious. They are perfectly brined, so you’ll want to eat more and more and more.
The Garlic-stuffed Olives are Queen olives from Seville. These olives are plump with long, skinny pits, which you won’t experience, because these Queen olives are pitted and stuffed with garlic cloves, then fermented in brine. Delicious and garlicky, but the brine minimizes the sharp note of raw garlic. I could eat these by the bag.
Greek Olive Mix is bursting with flavor. There are many types of olives (all pitted), including green, black, red, and more, all fermented with delicious Mediterranean herbs. You’ll be transported to a sunny Greek isle while eating these. They would be great as a tapenade, too.
I stored the open bags in my fridge for a while and when I went back to them, one of the bags had a white, flaky substance floating on top. I might have worried about this, but Olive My Pickle includes a handy sheet about fermentation, which included some FAQs. FAQ #3 included a paragraph about what causes the white flakiness and explains that the olives are perfectly fine to eat and you can just rinse off the flakes and continue to enjoy the olives.
TOP TIP: There’s a Thanksgiving sauerkraut that sounds like the perfect addition to any relish tray. There’s also a pickle-brined olive that I am definitely intrigued by. There are even six flavors of pickle juice to drink. If you’re a runner, you know that pickle juice is a great recovery drink.
Olive My Pickle is a subscription service, but you can buy one-time shipments, as well. Olive My Pickle items come in boxes of 3, 6, 9, or 12+ and you can mix and match the different types of fermented items. Olive My Pickle has many varieties of flavors within each of their categories, so it’s a great way to introduce your family to the wonders of fermented foods.
