The Neuhaus Advent Calendar Book is stunning. Presented in a book-like sleeve, with an easel to hold it open as if it were a tome in an elegant library, the advent calendar itself is a book, opening to the story of Neuhaus chocolates.
The interior of the Neuhaus Advent Calendar Book tells the story of Neuhaus from its start in 1857 as a pharmacy in Brussels to the powerhouse chocolate company that it is today. Neuhaus moved from pharmacy to chocolate when Jean Neuhaus had the brilliant idea to coat medicines in chocolate to make them easier to take. The numbers of the windows are cleverly integrated into the story.
In 1912, Jean Neuhaus’s grandson created the first Belgian praline, swapping medicine for delicious fillings in chocolate coatings. Another Neuhaus invention was the beautiful presentation box, called a ballotin, that is still in use today.
Among the many delicious chocolates in the Neuhaus Advent Calendar Book are two special inventions: the Irrésistible and the Limited Edition Souvenir. The Irrésistible was created for presentation at the 1958 World Exposition in Brussels. It’s a nougatine shell, filled with a ganache, caramel, or cream, then coated in chocolate. The Neuhaus Advent Calendar Book includes the two original 1958 Irrésistables: Caprice and Tentation.
The Limited Edition Souvenir is a new creation. The star shapes come in three flavors: Popcorn, in a milk chocolate coating; Gingerbread, in a white chocolate coating; and Maple Syrup, in a dark chocolate coating. The Neuhaus Advent Calendar Book includes one of the Popcorn Souvenirs, but you can also buy them in a special presentation box: https://www.neuhauschocolates.com/en_US/shop/limited-edition-souvenirs/5026078.html.
As always, my reviews are spoiler free, but I did try several of the chocolates in the calendar (as seen above). The two chocolates that I highlighted above are delicious. The Neuhaus Advent Calendar Book is a wonderful gift for anyone on your list, including yourself. Indulge yourself in chocolates made from 100% sustainably-sourced cacao, 100% natural ingredients, and sustainable packaging wherever possible. In addition to the Neuhaus Advent Calendar Book, Neuhaus has a 25-window Classic Advent Calendar, with small chocolate figures and bonbons, and a massive Sharing Advent Calendar with 78 Neuhaus chocolates to share (or not). Neuhaus has also created a wonderful video for the Advent Calendar Book that is definitely worth visiting the website to watch.
