Our next advent calendar is from Lakrids by Bülow. Before we go any further, I’m going to translate, just in case. Lakrids is the Danish word for licorice. Lakrids by Bülow is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is widely recognized as one of the top licorice makers in the world.
Lakrids by Bülow advent calendar décor is sophisticated charming. On a flat black background, various winter- and Christmas-themed items are scattered across the windows. This is one of the most elegant advent calendars I’ve ever seen. There are messages on the inside of each window, too, including facts about the company, the licorice, and fun, anticipatory messages about the approach of the holidays. A couple of them also include QR codes where you can leave feedback about the flavor you’re tasting.
While Lakrids by Bülow does make regular, uncoated licorice, the advent calendar holds mostly licorice dragees, little round balls of licorice, coated in up to 30 thin layers of chocolate, and then covered in a candy coating. With flavors ranging from plain licorice to passion fruit, there’s a flavor that everyone can enjoy. There are even some special flavors, which we won’t reveal here, but very Scandinavian (and delicious!). Some of the more popular flavors are duplicated in the calendar. I do wish they had included the pink pineapple flavor in the advent calendar, rather than some of the duplicate flavors. Pineapple is my favorite fruit!
Lakrids by Bülow included two non-dragee pieces, as well. This review is spoiler-free, but those two special items are very intriguing. The Lakrids by Bülow advent calendar is easily sharable. Of course, as always, you can trade off days to open windows. Because each of the bags holds two dragees, you can share each day’s treats, as well!
