Gift Guide for Single Parents– Food Edition by Guest Writer George Gensler!
It’s holiday gift guide season and we’re focusing on gifts for single parents this year. Whether you know someone who is a single parent for a night, a weekend, a week, or always, these gifts are chosen for any of those times. There are several guides, themed differently, so you can choose the type of gift you want to give. This one is food and food-related items.
ACC Art Books Laduree Sucre: The Recipes Cookbook
Ladurée is famous for its macarons, but they are so much more than macarons. They are teas and pastries, coffee and cookies, ice creams and cakes. Written by Philippe Andrieu with photographs by Sophie Tramier, Ladurée Sucré: The Recipes is a beautiful cookbook, stunning enough to exhibit on your coffee table and full of incredible recipes that will challenge your inner patissier.
Insight Editions Chef Snoopy Cookbook
What a fun cookbook! Insight Editions has created the Chef Snoopy Cookbook for young chefs, really, but what a great gift for a parent of a young child. There are recipes for dishes seen in the Peanuts comic strips and movies, plus Peanuts-inspired treats, like Snoopy’s Gingerbread Doghouse! Hours of cooking together, making delicious dishes, like Snoopy’s Thanksgiving Snack, to eat while you watch Peanuts movies.
Insight Editions Candy Land Cookbook
Want more fun cooking experiences? The Candy Land Cookbook, also from Insight Editions, is another child-centric cookbook, with dozens of recipes inspired by the classic Candy Land. Just imagine recreating the Candy Land gameboard for a birthday party, and moving through the treats with individualized Gingerbread Movers.
Duke’s Mayonnaise has navigated the tricky world of recipe adjustment by publishing this cookbook, which gives perfect measurements for using Duke’s mayonnaise (which is tangier and creamier than usual mayos) in recipes from scrambled eggs to chocolate cake. I highly recommend the pimento cheese recipe!
Taylor’s Candy and Deep Fry Thermometer
If your single parent friend or relative is a baker or candy maker, Taylor’s Candy and Deep Fry Thermometer is a great gift. It’s digital, programmable, and has a pot clip, so you can be hands-free while your candy or oil is getting to temperature.
Another great gift for your baking friends is Taylor’s Dual Platform Kitchen Scale. There are two separate scales in one device, letting you measure your ingredients on the large platform (up to 15 pounds), while measuring your spices and small amounts simultaneously on the small platform (up to 16 ounces). Both scales reset to tare weight as you add ingredients, so you can measure everything in one bowl (well, not the small ingredients, but you can retare the large platform as you add everything).
For the tea lovers in your life, Lotus’s The Purist Kettle is the perfect electric kettle for boiling water for tea. Different teas (white, green, black, etc.) brew best at certain temperatures and The Purist Kettle is designed to boil water so precisely that you will get the perfect temperature every time. The dial is even marked for the different teas, so all you have to do is set the type of tea you want and the kettle will stop when it gets to that temperature. There’s a manual setting, too, for your non-tea boiled water needs.
Farberware Build-a-Board Snacklebox
Everyone loves a charcuterie board and the Farberware Build-a-Board Snacklebox is an excellent option for single parents. While prepping meals for their littles, they can add in the prep for the Snacklebox and create a treat to enjoy when they’re on their own. The Large Build-a-Board Snacklebox has 11 compartments and the lid is a chopping board, so it’s an all-in-one board and storage unit, offering handy access to your tasty treats. It is not watertight, though, so be careful what your store and how you move it around.
The Collective Book Studio’s A Taste of the World cookbook was written by Rowena Scherer, founder of Eat2Explore, as a way to introduce children to cuisines from around the world. The recipes are child-friendly and each country’s section includes information about the culture and cuisine of the country.
