Candied Grapes Recipe with Kandy Spice!
I have been eating frozen grapes since I was in college. They’re delicious; the grapes last longer; and they can double as ice cubes, so your drink doesn’t get watered down. When the candied grapes trend started, I thought it was interesting, but I didn’t try it. And then, I discovered Curio Spice Co.’s Kandy Spice and a lightbulb went off over my head, here is the Candied Grapes Recipe with Kandy Spice!
These candied grapes don’t require cooking, happily. I have a strong fear of burning myself with boiling sugar. These candied grapes are frozen and are very simple to make. You only need four ingredients:
1-pound seedless grapes
1 lemon (or packaged lemon juice)
5 tsps (or so) Curio Kandy Spice
10-15 tsps (or so) superfine sugar
You’ll need the following tools:
-Bowls for the grapes, juice, and spice
-1 tsp measure (it was the largest measuring spoon that fit in the Curio tin)
-Lemon juicer (or not, if you’re using packaged lemon juice)
-Whisk
-Tongs (angled are easier, but straight will work, too)
-Baking Sheet
-Parchment paper
After you’ve washed and let the grapes thoroughly dry (I left them overnight), place them in a bowl and set at the beginning of your workspace. Juice the lemon into a separate bowl. Add the Kandy Spice and superfine sugar to a third bowl and whisk together until completely blended.
TOP TIP: Taste the sugar blend and adjust it to taste. I used a ration of 2 parts sugar to 1 part Kandy Spice, which I enjoyed, but my nephew thought they needed more sugar.
Drop a few grapes into the lemon juice and roll them around to make sure they’re completely covered. Drop the grapes one at a time into the Kandy Spice blend and roll them around to make sure they’re completely covered. Use the tongs to transfer them to the parchment-covered baking sheet.
Repeat the process until all of the grapes have been coated in lemon juice and the Kandy Spice blend and transferred to the baking sheet. Make sure the grapes don’t touch after you’ve put them in the freezer.
TOP TIP: If you have leftover lemon juice and Kandy Spice blend, combine them in a mug, add hot water and enjoy as a hot beverage. Add sugar as needed.
Put the baking sheet in the freezer. The grapes should be frozen in about an hour, but I usually make mine at night and leave them to freeze overnight. When they’re completely frozen, they can be transferred to a plastic bowl or Ziploc bag to snack from as and when.
Alternative: As you can see in the picture above, I tried a few chunks of pineapple, too. I think the pineapple tastes even better than the grapes! If you’ve ever been to Hawai’i and had pineapple with li hing, you’ll understand. It’s definitely worth trying, if you like pineapple, and you don’t need lemon juice for the pineapple.
Alternative: Curio Spice Co. makes a Red Summer Sangria blend (delicious summertime beverage!). I’ve also made candied grapes using Red Summer Sangria Lemonade (using Natalie’s lemonade) instead of the lemon juice. An excellent alternative to plain lemon juice.
Alternative: Curio Spice Co. also has a Fleur Spice, which has a nice floral note. You can candy the grapes with a Fleur Spice blend, too.
