It’s still Christmas in July! We are celebrating with a series of advent calendar reviews to get the season started. Week 3 brings us a Thames & Kosmos advent calendar. We’ve reviewed the Thames & Kosmos Exit The Game Advent Calendars in previous years, but for Christmas in July, we’re reviewing their Science Advent Calendar Volume 3.
The Thames & Kosmos Advent Calendar Volume 3 contains 24 numbered boxes. Each box contains a science experiment, based on classic chemistry, biology and physics experiments. Every day, your little gets to open a small present with science fun inside. The outer decoration on the daily boxes is a stylized image of the type of experiment that box contains.
The box contains most, if not all, of the materials you need to conduct the experiment. The additional materials needed are things you would most likely have around the house.
TOP TIP: The back of the sleeve around the box has a list of all of the additional materials you’ll need, so you can have everything ready before your littles open any of the boxes.
Each box opens flat and the inner decoration includes: a list of the materials needed for the experiment; the instructions for conducting the experiment; an explanation of the science behind the experiment; and additional facts about the experiment. Each daily box is an entire experiment, so you don’t need to build things up day by day to get to the result.
As I mentioned in last week’s review (see here), our advent calendar tradition is to open the windows at night, when the day is done. As with the previous calendar, it might be better to open these windows in the morning, so your littles can perform the experiment right away and you can avoid having bedtime “discussions” about whether or not to complete the experiment now.
The Thames & Kosmos Science Advent Calendar Volume 3 for ages 8-12+, but plan to supervise, even if from a distance, in case your little misses a step or needs guidance to complete the experiments. It’s a great activity for science lovers, but can also help bridge the gap for struggling science students. The Thames & Kosmos Science Advent Calendar Volume 3 is available for pre-purchase now and will be shipped by middle to late August!
TOP TIP: The first two Thames & Kosmos Science Advent Calendars are still available, so if you have multiple children or your little loves this one, you can stock up. These would also be cool Halloween countdown calendars for your little mad scientist! How cute would it be for your little to dress up as Dr. Frankenstein when they run the experiment each day?! If you do this, please post pictures and tag us!
We’ll have an advent calendar review every week in July, so come back next week to see the next one or, better yet, subscribe and you’ll get a link in your mailbox to let you know when the next one is ready. Link to last week’s Advent Calendar post here!
