Circle of Colors Mushrooms Puzzle Review by Guest Writer George Gensler
It’s still January, so we’re continuing our puzzle reviews for National Puzzle Month! Today, we’re covering the classic jigsaw puzzle. This one is from Ravensburger and is a gorgeous kaleidoscope of mushrooms. We’ve got a bonus review for you this month, too. Ravensburger’s Sort & Go. Keep reading to the end to get the details about this puzzle giveaway!
What’s in the box? The jigsaw puzzle pieces and a poster of the puzzle. The Ravensburger Circle of Colors Mushroom puzzle is a standard jigsaw puzzle, mostly. Because the finished puzzle is round, there are some unusual pieces, but nothing tricky about the shapes. The colors are a different story. When I first opened the puzzle, I thought the colors would make it very simple to solve, but this is still a challenging puzzle.
I’ve never used a puzzle sorter before, so the Sort & Go was a unique experience for me. The Circle of Colors puzzle was a great puzzle to experiment with the Sort & Go. I sorted all of the pieces by color, also sorting out the edge pieces, because I always start with the edges, if they’re uniform. The Sort & Go has six different puzzle-piece-shaped trays that both slot together horizontally and vertically. The vertical slotting means that you can store the pieces in the box so you don’t have to leave the pieces out overnight or if you’ve got a rambunctious family.
I loved sorting the pieces by color into individual trays, because I could solve the puzzle from least favorite color (yellow/orange) to favorite (purple). Another benefit, though it wasn’t necessary for this puzzle, because of the colors, is that you can also sort by shapes. When I get to the end of a challenging puzzle, I sort the pieces by shape and by number of pips and blanks, and the Sort & Go would work well for that, too. Much better than the stacks I usually have to arrange.
Alyssa De Asis, an illustrator from the Philippines, is the artist behind this gorgeous design. I love the vibrant, almost iridescent, colors, plus the varying types of mushrooms with so many different shapes. I’m allergic to mushrooms, so I’ve never eaten one, but I love the way they look and this puzzle is perfect. I’d love to see her take on peppers! I’ve got my eye on the Color of Circles Desserts puzzle now.
Ravensburger Circle of Colors Mushrooms Puzzle is a classic Ravensburger puzzle. The pieces are well-made and fit together neatly with that satisfying click. The image is colorful and bright with the mushrooms shining out of the dark green background. The poster is quite large, so I used the box top as my puzzle guide, but if your puzzle is being solved on a table near a wall, it would be an excellent guide. Speaking of guides, the Ravensburger puzzle box includes a handy guide that tells you the number of pieces (this one has 500); what type of puzzle (this one is for relaxing); and the dimensions (this one is 20.5”) of the completed puzzle. There is no age-limitation noted, but, because of the size of the pieces (approximately 1 inch), be sure to supervise if you have littles helping you. Most, if not all, of the Ravensburger Circle of Colors puzzles have 500 pieces, so these are good choices for a relaxing project that can be completed in an afternoon or two.
