The Trockaderos are back at the Joyce Theater again this year and what a treat! We went yesterday and once again had a blast watching classical ballet done with great humor, style, and athleticism! For tickets and more information, visit The Joyce Theater website where Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is performing through January 5, 2025! This is a must-see show!
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is an all-male ballet troupe where the men play the roles that are traditionally played by ballerinas. And having worked for American Ballet Theater for 14 years, I know firsthand how hard it is do pointe work (when they stand on their toes for extended periods), which is especially difficult for men! And these guys do it wonderfully and then add a comic twist to the performances! These shows are an amazing mix of true ballet mastery coupled with a fantastic sense of humor mixed throughout! One of the most entertaining shows you will ever see!
We attended the Saturday matinee which included some dance instruction to keep the kids excited about the production, and of course the side effect was that the entire audience got involved! We were instructed to work through the routine of the dying swan by one of the ballet masters, and just about the entire audience stood up and acted out the scene! It was a wonderful treat, and I got to show off my swan arms that I had learned from my old ballet days, swan arms start from the shoulders!
The below is a snippet from the Trocks version of the Dying Swan, an incredible ballet masterpiece, and in true Trock style, done here with style, grace, and tremendous humor, the dying swan losing her feathers throughout is one of the comedic touches added by the Trocks! One of my favorite pieces in the ballet world, it was a tremendous treat and ended our show this past Saturday!
Lastly, Happy 50th Anniversary to Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo!!!
