Passenger on BritBox is Must See TV!
ComicCon is back in NYC and I had the opportunity to interview the writer/creator of Passenger, and two of its stars. The night before the interviews I was sent the entire six season series to view, and I thought I would watch on e episode to have a better understanding of what I would be talking about to these folks.
The first episode was so gripping that I proceeded to watch almost the entire series. At 1 am I finally went to bed as I had to be up early for the first day of ComicCon! That is how well done this show is, Passenger is a must-see series, watch it now, and if you do not subscribe to Britbox, this is the perfect reason to subscribe today:
Written by debut screenwriter Andrew Buchan, who is best known for his acting roles on Broadchurch, The Honourable Woman and Better, Passenger explores a close-knit community who are unwilling to face their fears of change, of outsiders and of the unknown. Set in the fictional small Northern town of Chadder Vale, Former Met Police Detective Riya Ajunwa (Wunmi Mosaku) investigates a series of strange and inexplicable crimes that have the townsfolk spinning on an axis. Riya arrived in decaying Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for that ‘one big crime’, the challenge that will make her feel alive again. Then one night local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears. The town barely has time to register her absence before she reappears the next day, apparently safe and sound. The townsfolk ask few questions and normal life resumes. But for Riya, a relative outsider to the Chadder Vale way of life, none of this sits right. As a series of strange happenings and increasingly shocking crimes start unfolding within the town, the resident’s resort to short-sighted theories and blame outside influences such as the fracking site and its manager Jim Bracknell (David Threlfall). As things become stranger, the people push back on Riya’s absurd notion that something is not right with this town. But what are they so afraid of?
Do you remember that amazing British crime drama Broadchurch? Well, the Passenger creator and write is none other than Andrew Buchan from that show! I was so excited to talk to Andre and tell him that I had no plans to stay up all night watching his new show, but it was so well done that I was instantly addicted and could not stop. His imaginary town of Chadder Vale is unlike any other town I had seen represented on the big screen before, and Andrew shared it reminded him of his North England hometown, everyone looking after each other, treating many situations with humor just to get through the day, etc.
There are so many different stories within the stories in this show, watch carefully so you do not miss anything! His brilliantly done character development holds your interest from the very start. The littlest detail will turn up later and you will be quite surprised how it all fits together! Congrats Andrew on your excellent debut creating and writing debut!
The lead in the show is Wunmi Mosaku (she worked in the TVA on the show “Loki!”) who plays Riya Ajunwa, the town’s top detective, in a town where the police chief keeps going on about the biggest problem is the theft of the local inhabitants’ bins. Her character goes through some changes through these six episodes, and Wunmi is one of the reasons this show is so great, I could not take my eyes off of her the whole time, I cannot wait to see more of her on the big screen! Her character arc is well written and well-acted, as Riya goes through some life changing situations! Plus, doesn’t her gorgeous outfit remind you of the color scheme in the TVA from Loki!
The last interview was with Barry Sloane who plays Eddie Wells, the town bad guy. And once again, Andrew shows off his terrific writing skills with another character who goes through some major changes in these six episodes. And Barry is up for it, his acting throughout is terrific. He was thrilled to have a role where he got to go through several different life changing scenarios in a short period of time, and he performed wonderfully.
I have frequently written about my love of British TV, and this show illustrates exactly why, the actors are top notch, the writing is exceptional, and the story arcs are well fleshed out and intelligent. Again, I was hooked before the first episode was finished, and you will be as well. Watch Passenger now, and subscribe to Britbox asap, it is one of the best channels ever!
