I love advent calendars! There is just something about opening each window for a new surprise every day. I wonder if that’s where the blind bag trend came from. I love mysteries and surprises and advent calendars give you both, while counting down to an entire day filled with mysteries and surprises. This review is mainly about the Princess Magic: Christmas under the Rainbow advent calendar, but the comments apply to any Playmobil advent calendar, including their other 2023 advent calendar: Horses of Waterfall: Christmas Sleigh Ride.
What’s in the box? Inside the boxes are the advent calendar itself, the backdrop for creating your tableaux, and an instruction booklet. The advent calendar has 24 doors and door number 24 is very big. I can’t wait to see what’s hidden there.
ADVENT CALENDAR FRONT
Another great feature of the Playmobil Advent Calendar is the hanging tab cut into the back of the box.
ADVENT CALENDAR BACK
When you pop out that tab and remove the cut-out pieces, you have a way to hang the advent calendar on the wall.
ADVENT CALENDAR HANGING
Part of the charm of the Playmobil set is the free play aspect. There is a princess theme with a touch of magic, but you can make the story whatever you can imagine. While some of the pieces are very specifically Christmas-themed, most of the pieces can be used year-round. They can be mixed in with other Playmobil Princess Magic sets (shown on the back of the advent calendar) or even with any other set.
PRINCESS MAGIC SETS
Tables, cakes, cookies, pitchers, glasses, baskets, etc., are all every day items that can be mixed and matched however you want. Even the princesses can be divested of their Santa hat and reindeer headband to become everyday princesses (if there is such a thing as an everyday princess). The Christmas tree and the presents (with their festive holiday wrapping paper) are (so far) the only truly Chrsitmasy items in the advent calendar.
Don’t read too far ahead if you open the instruction booklet. It details what each day’s window holds with the instructions for how to construct the piece or suggestions for how to display them. The advent calendars are marked for ages 4-10, but I am quite a bit older than that and am loving the experience. As always with sets that have small pieces, be sure to help your littles open the windows and the bags.
Happy holidays, all!
