It’s Christmas in July! Well, Advent in July, anyway. In anticipation of their 2023 Exit the Game Advent Calendar, I’m reviewing the one I did last December: The Hunt for the Golden Book. It was the second Exit the Game advent calendar, but my first. In the Hunt for the Golden Book, you are tasked with retrieving Santa’s Golden Book. Why is the book so important? That’s where Santa keeps all of the Christmas wishes he receives. We must get it back, so all the children can have their wishes granted. We’re here for you, Santa!
Before we get to The Hunt for the Golden Book Advent Calendar review, here’s some background on Exit the Game. Exit the Game puzzles are escape room puzzles that come in a box. You have to work your way through the puzzles to complete the overall puzzle and Exit the Game. They’re about the size of a paperback book. My family think they’re best solved together, because we have not yet solved one where every single person didn’t make a significant contribution to discovering the solution to a puzzle. You can probably do it on your own, but it would take a lot longer and it really is gratifying to see the light bulb go off when someone realizes the way to solve the puzzle, especially when the solver is a child.
What’s in the box? This is a very big box, much bigger than the average advent calendar. There is a small compartment for each day, each of which contains one or more puzzle cards and, in some cases, props. There is a decoder board and there are two booklets, too. One is the Story Book, which guides you through the puzzles and the other is the Help Book and Game Instructions booklet, which is where you begin. If you read when you’re supposed to and follow the instructions, you’ll definitely make it through the story.
How to solve an Exit the Game Advent Calendar:
First, you read the marked section in the Help Book. It will tell you how, when, and where to begin. It is important to follow the instructions so you can correctly get from day to day, making it possible to correctly solve the overall puzzle.
It’s important to note that only the door for the first day of the advent calendar is numbered. That’s right. In order to find the next day’s door, you have to correctly solve each day’s puzzle. Don’t worry, though, solving the puzzles only takes 10 or 15 minutes (could take longer if you have help from your littles), so it’s not a big daily time investment, but solving the puzzles is so satisfying. And, if you can solve one, there are hints and solutions. Trust me, I never opened the next day’s door without double-checking that I had the correct door to open.
The story takes you from room to room in a little mountain village, so take a moment to appreciate the work that went into the box, too. Each of the day compartment’s is individually themed for that day’s puzzle and, sometimes, contains information you need to solve the puzzle. Every bit of this advent calendar is delightful!
You get 24 days (more or less – I started mine late and had to do a few puzzles a day until I caught up, but it’s your advent calendar and you can do it all in one day, if you want) of fun, challenging puzzles that lead you through time and space and Santa gives you a prize when you bring him the Golden Book. Don’t do it for the prize, though. The journey IS the destination with Exit the Game Advent Calendars!
The Hunt for the Golden Book Advent Calendar is a beginner level Exit the Game puzzle and can be enjoyed by the whole family, but there are small pieces, and you might need to use scissors. If the littles want to be involved make sure there is plenty of adult supervision.
