Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo
I was a fundraiser for a major ballet company for 14 years, so I am familiar with the art form. In that time, I have seen the world renowned Trockaderos several times, and it was a treat to return last night!
The “Trocks” take classical ballet and turn it on its ass! In the classical ballet you are familiar with, men never go on pointe. Here, the Trock men do, all the time. And just to be clear, as easy as they make it look, it is hard as heck, especially for the male body. In fact, many of the classical moves are performed by the Trok men, and they do it to perfection. FYI, that means these guys are working their tushies off all year long. Presenting this art to you, the audience, takes a tremendous amount of dedication and hard work.
Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, captivating audiences since 1974, returns to The Joyce for another uproarious holiday program in its signature comic style. The beloved troupe of male dancers takes the stage for three weeks of nonstop skilled pointe work and hilarious parodying of classical ballet. Program highlights include Swan Lake Act II: Le Lac Des Cygnes, Majisimas, Les Sylphides, Paquita, and more!
The show was fabulous beyond words. At the same time that these men are recreating some of the world’s most beautiful ballets, they are also adding humor and making fun of some of the components of said ballets. And they do so brilliantly.
The fluid body movements, the wonderful pas de deux’s, the incredible turns all make classical ballet an exquisite art form. And the men of the Ballet Trockadero do all this while adding humor to the story. These folks are highly skilled, all of these movements require a lot of training and hard work, and we benefit by a wonderful, finished product that is beautiful and funny at the same time. Sometimes hysterically funny.
Lastly, my favorite small piece is the Dying Swan. This solo requires the dancer to move their arms so fluidly you think you are watching an actual bird’s wing movements. Last night’s dancer captured those movements perfectly. And that is topped off by their refusal to die, because this is serious classical ballet with an extremely humorous twist! Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is an amazing experience and should be experienced wherever and whenever they come to your town!

And one more because you have to see it to believe it and love it! A true dying swan!
