Jay’s review, no holds barred:

So I did finish the incredibly short 7 episode season of Interview with the Vampire. I have lots of thoughts on it, but, ultimately, I loved it and it’s a series that gets better with each episode, with the weakest link actually being the pilot. Yet, by the end, it looks to be the most promising new show of 2022…

But 7 effing episodes for one season?!? And it doesn’t even finish the first book? Come on… Everyone’s going to age out of their roles before the trilogy is finished at this rate.

No, it’s not a straight up adaptation of the book. Neither was the film. This is a completely new take with a lot of changes. Setting and characters are completely different… but Ann Rice herself oversaw the scripts with her son and these changes weren’t just done with her blessing… they were done BY her. And you can tell, as despite all the changes, much of the book is intact. Lestat and Louis feel more like the book characters than the film ever did, and while I contend that Claudia is essentially a completely different character here, for several obvious reasons, her overall arc seems to be intact somehow. OR at least it seems (this is only the first half of book 1, after all).

Yes, I have heard that the series will tie directly to the upcoming season of the Mayfair Witches (an adaptation LOOOONG overdue), and I definitely look forward to that even if it ends up being just Easter Eggs in season 1.

The one thing that is bothering me slightly… why call it “Interview with the Vampire”? I know that’s the name of the first book, but the bookend interview gimmick (a gimmick I am a fan of, by the way… not all gimmicks are bad) is only in the first book and the reason why the series is called “The Vampire Chronicles” and not “The Interview Trilogy).

Unless they just plan to keep the interview aspect. As I understand, Chris is still heavily involved in the series after his mother’s passing and he planned the series out with her, so he alone knows what she planned there.

Anyway… good series on AMC+ that has been airing on AMC lately. You should definitely watch it!
