It’s hard to describe this film, and at the same time it was wonderful! And it’s been around as short form YouTube videos for over a decade!
Marcel the snail lives in an Airbnb with his grandmother. It seems that the couple living their originally, fought so much, that they eventually split up. At that point, Grandma was the only relative that remained behind besides Marcel.
Dean Fleischer-Camp plays a fictional version of himself, a documentary filmmaker who discovers Marcel (voiced by Jenny Slate) and starts filming him. Marcel is a simple soul who had words of wisdom for many situations as we watch how he has made a home for himself and his grandmother. He is ingenious, with his many contraptions and modes of transportation. This films beauty is its simplicity. And Marcel is a born star. He is witty without realizing it, and sharp in his commentary about life. His grandmother is voiced by Isabella Rossellini and they have a wonderful relationship, as you will see. The snails are the only part of the film that is animated and yet perfectly melded into the real world. You will marvel at Marcel’s innocence, coupled with his knowledge of the real world. He is one sharp snail and his views on life are smart and poignant. I cannot say enough how beautiful this movie is:
Marcel is an adorable one-inch-tall shell who ekes out a colorful existence with his grandmother Connie and their pet lint, Alan. Once part of a sprawling community of shells, they now live alone as the sole survivors of a mysterious tragedy. But when a documentary filmmaker discovers them amongst the clutter of his Airbnb, the short film he posts online brings Marcel millions of passionate fans, as well as unprecedented dangers and a new hope at finding his long-lost family. A beloved character gets his big-screen debut in this hilarious and heartwarming story about finding connection in the smallest corners.
This is one of the sweetest films that I have ever seen, and I cannot recommend it highly enough!
