Big Mouth on Netflis is one of the hottest shows on television:
Teenage friends find their lives upended by the wonders and horrors of puberty in this edgy comedy from real-life pals Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg.
Thank goodness I have a teenager who introduced me to this show, I would never have discovered this animated series otherwise.
Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg have been friends since elementary school, growing up in neighboring towns in Westchester County, NY. They had the idea of writing an animated show about their own awkward teenage years, and have come up with this incredibly entertaining show that gives us a look into the minds of teens who barely know what is going on in their own heads, and with their changing and growing bodies. Racy barely describes how far out these writers go to illustrate these almost scarring years for teens, sometimes it feels like if the characters weren’t animated, the police would have come on set to arrest people.
And it’s funny, because it is true. So many of the scenes are from the thoughts of all of us as teens, or people we knew. And then they blow it up by creating characters like the hormone monsters for the boys and girls. They are way out there as far as sexuality is concerned, but they have some good points about youth and their sexual awakenings.
And the show is hilarious and entertaining. My teenager first showed this to me and we have been watching together ever since. The subject matter can be tough to watch with your kids, but as several people brought up in our interviews, it can also lay the ground work for some healthy conversations with our teens, something that I have always felt was important, and no parent should shy away from.
And we got to chat with writer, creater, and actor, Nick Kroll
Like many of the folks in the show, Nick voices serval characters, one of them being a girl, and that just increase the hilarity of the character!
I did ask if they ever felt things went too far, and Nick shared that they go through several steps before the final material makes it into the final show.
Here are some quick takeaways for those that have yet to binge the new season:
1. Comedienne Ali Wong has a role.
2. Thandie Newton joins as a female hormone monster with a London party girl type character).
3. Andrew Rannells plays Matthew MacDell, a flamboyantly gay student, and his character will be further developed.
4. The Queer Eye guys will makeover Coach Steve!
5. There is a musical episode based on the 90’s movie “Disclosure.”
And there is enough material for this show to go on for years! They say the table reads are made up of the funniest minds in Hollywood and are hysterical! And one of the funniest guys is Jason Jason Mantzoukas, who plays the overly sexual Jay Bolzerian:
I did not get a photo with Jessi Klein, who plays Jessi Glaser, and she had us in stitches! The opportunity to interview these folks, from one of my favorite shows, was a highlight for me!
Here is a photo of Maya Rudolph as Connie the Hormone Monstress, you have to see the show to see how fantastic she is!
