From Academy Award® Winner Barry Jenkins,* adapted from James Baldwin’s acclaimed novel, comes this timeless love story set in early 1970s Harlem. Newly engaged 19-year-old Tish (KiKi Layne) and her fiancé Fonny (Stephan James) have a beautiful future ahead. But their plans are derailed when Fonny is arrested for a crime he did not commit. Now the pair and their families must fight for justice in the name of love and the promise of the American dream in this lush, moving, dramatic film, also starring Academy Award® Nominee Regina King**.
*Adapted Screenplay (Screenplay by Barry Jenkins; Story by Tarell Alvin McCraney), Moonlight, 2016.
**Best Supporting Actress, If Beale Street Could Talk, 2018
First, I love Regina King, I feel like I grew up with her! I used to watch her when she was a teenager on the TV show 227! It has been wonderful to watch her evolve into an award winning actress. She was amazing as the mom in this movie, she had me in tears in her last scene!
It was like watching a beautifully written play. Listening to the narrations by Kiki’s Tish character during the play were akin to listening to poetry, the lines were so well written. It was a beautiful love story, and it was a tragic love story, both at the same time.
This movie deals with the harsh racism of 1970’s New York. Two young people are in love, but do they have a chance when they are surrounded by hate? Is love enough? Everyone chips in to help fight the system, and watching this journey unfold makes one think, and hopefully continue, to work for change in this country. This is a must see movie.
