Where were you on 9/11? My story follows below. For now, here is information on this important movie, one that helps us to understand what happened, with tools on how to talk to your kids. With a personalized giveaway so that we never forget.

9/11 opens in theaters on September 8 and features an all star cast including Luis Guzman (The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3), Gina Gershon (Showgirls), Wood Harris (Justified), Jacqueline Bisset (Dancing on the Edge (BBC), Welcome to New York), Olga Fonda (The Vampire Diaries) and Bruce Davison (X-Men).

In the World Trade Center, a billionaire sits in his attorney’s office awaiting a divorce hearing against his wife. In a west side apartment, a bike messenger kisses his 5-year old daughter and sings her “Happy Birthday” before leaving for work. A maintenance man gets dispatched to help a tenant with his lock. In an upper east side apartment, a young model musters the courage to break up with her sugar daddy. As random as random can be, these individuals step into a crowded World Trade Center elevator.

Wrapped up in their own world, they all ride silently hearing only the sound of the elevator giving notice of each floor. When the elevator stops on the 34th floor, it empties leaving only these five behind. Moments later … their world changes as the collision of a jet into the North Tower incapacitates the elevator.

With no understanding of what has happened and is happening around them, these fives are forced to band together and fight against all odds to escape from the impending horrific collapse. During these critical minutes, a story of courage, faith, and the will to live unfolds.

Do you remember where were you were this all happened? I was in bed watching TV. I worked afternoons and evenings, so mornings were my relaxing time. I was watching the events unfold and had the feeling that I was not watching reality. It took awhile for the truth of the events to set in, and then I had to find my spouse who worked in that area.

This was also just a few days after I lost my grandmother, one of the family  members that was closest to me, my whole life, so I was still in mourning for her. Many things felt unreal at the time. I am glad that she did not live to see this event unfold.

Eventually I found my spouse, I no longer remember those details, he was one block from the World Trade Centers and just headed away from the scene once the staff realized they had to evacuate.

We live on 16th street, and for the next few days no one was allowed below 14th street, two blocks from us, without proper ID. It was a surreal time for all of us, especially those that live in the area. I lost an old co-worker, my parents friends lost their son, and our police woman friend lost her police officer brother.

We felt like we would never recover. But we did. And it also made me realize how lucky we are in the contiguous 48 states that these types of events rarely affect us, so close to home. Whereas large populations in other countries live with this type horror all the time. I try to impress upon my son, who was born 1 1/2 years later, how fortunate we are to live under such great protection, and even that it is not 100%. Although it is probably closer 10 100% than any other country on our fragile planet.
