GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 on Digital Aug 8 & 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray Aug 22!
In preparation for the release of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 on Blu-ray, we got to meet and chat with two of the actresses from the movie: Karen Gillan, who plays Nebula, and Pom Klementieff, who plays Mantis. It was extra exciting as we were meeting them behind the main stage at D23, so we got to go deep into the bowels of the convention center, and even saw some prep work for the next panel. It was awesome. And a little dark!

It was very exciting to meet these two ladies, after all I am a huge fan of the ftranchise and loved both of the movies!
Karen Gillan had just been on stage as part of the presentation of the new Avengers: Infinity War teaser that we had just seen. We asked her how it felt to be part of that team, and the uproarious reception she and all the cast there (20 stars from the Marvel Universe) received. Let me preface by saying that as of now we are still the only ones who have seen that teaser, and it was amazing, and then as each of the actors came onto the stage afterwards, one by one, the convention hall filled with thousands of fans as going crazy. And Miss Gillan got to be o the receiving end of this adoration! She shared that she loved hearing the crowd cheering and that it felt great to be part of such a great franchise.
One of our group also posed a terrific question, what was it like working with the Russo Brothers vs. working with James Gunn. Mr. Gunn is the Director for the two Guardians movies Karen has been in, and the Russo Brothers are directing her in the new Avengers movie. She shared that when working with James there was a collaboration on forming and growing in the role of Nebula’s character. As the one who now knows her character so well, she brings that full knowledge of who Nebula is and what she has gone through to the set for the Russo Brothers, hence no need for the collaborative efforts she and James had gone through. It was very interesting to hear this take on working with the two different Directors in the same Marvel Universe! It was also cool to get the inside scoop on working with the actors from the Avengers: Karen said they were all very down to earth and easy to work with. They are co-workers after all for this movie filming, not just the superstar celebs that we see in print and on TV.
You can see Nebula is a tough girl character, and one thing Karen noted is that children are less scared of her now, the second movie showed a much nicer side of Nebula!
Pom is the new girl in this universe and was quite humbled to be part of this crew. She did share about one gag that Michael Rooker played on her on set, perhaps to loosen her up. He may have put his naked behind on a window as a goof! Just the sort of thing to loosen a new actress up on a set where the actors had been together for a previous movie!
Pom loved playing her character of Mantis. She said there was a refreshing innocence about her. She also liked the development of her character and feels that the Guardians are her new family, and now her character has more to lose with the coming Infinity War.
Then we asked the general questions! We asked our women speakers about how they felt about the increase in women superheroes, which they now both were! Karen said it was about time, and she liked being the bad-ass type. Pom shared that there were different types of strong women and she was glad to play a superhero with non-physical powers!

Both ladies shared that the similarity with their characters was that neither of them seemed to believe in themselves until others believed in them. Nebula is insecure, especially after the vulnerability she grew up with around her father, Thanos, who was not a kindly soul. And Pom was basically a slave to Peter Quill’s dad, Ego, the Living Planet. It couldn’t have been easy for either of those girls to grow and mature with those role models!
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 releases on Digital August 8 & 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray on August 22, 2017! This is a must own movie for many repeat viewings!
Disclosure: Disney invited me on this press trip and paid all of my expenses. No other compensation was received. All opinions are always 100% my own and honest.
And I met Karen Gillan at the red carpet premiere of Thor: The Dark World. I hardly recognized her and found out later her head had been shaved for her role in the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, and it was just growing back! I did ask the first question at the above interviews, did James Gunn ask her to shave her head for this second Guardians movie. Karen said that while her costume prep is quite long (four hours), James no longer requires her to shave her head! She was very happy about that!
