I met the star of Freeform’s new show, Beyond, at this past years NYC Comic Con. I was thrilled to be able to participate in this round table discussion as I had just previewed the first episode. The show looks to be another solid hit for Freeform TV, it has all the supernatural and suspense aspects necessary to keep us all enthralled!
Holden Matthews miraculously wakes up from a devastating coma to the wonderment of his parents Tom and Diane and younger brother Luke. But the world has changed since Holden went to sleep, and he now has to navigate being an adult when all he remembers is being a child. At the same time, Holden is experiencing abilities and memories he can’t explain, and a mysterious woman named Willa warns him not to trust those around him. When a sinister stranger attacks Holden and claims he knows about his new powers, Holden is faced with uncovering just what happened to him while he was in a coma. “Beyond” will have its on-air debut on MONDAY, JANUARY 2, 2017, at 9:00 p.m. EST, with a special two-hour premiere event on Freeform.
There is also a humorous aspect to the show, we get to watch Burkely Duffield, as the main character, Holden, behave like the 13 year old he is mentally, in a 25 year old’s body. Between having his body go through puberty while he was in a coma, to learning how to shave and talk to girls, the comedic parts add to the enjoyment of the show!
Executive Producer Tim Kring enjoyed sharing with us how he hired writer Adam Nussdorf for Beyond, after not hiring him for a previous show. Adam was not as amused! They both agreed that they were excited to do a show without any big name stars so the focus would not be taken away from the story.
We chatted about the different aspects of this show, and the questions it raises: is there an after-life, are there other dimensions that we step into, do we all have powers that only some learn how to tap into? This is exactly the type of supernatural/family drama that I find intriguing and I cannot wait for more!
Executive Producer David Eick came on board after the pilot was completed and said that it was important to be able to distinguish this show from other shows such as Witch Mountain. They did not want to over-do the visual effects, as they wanted the show to feel like something that could happen in our world.
Lastly, I am trying to figure out who the bad guys are! Some of the governments tactics are questionable, but are they for a noble cause? We have to watch to find out! AND!!! You can binge watch! All episodes are being released at one time: on January 2 at 9:00 p.m., the entire first season of “Beyond” will be available on multiple digital platforms, including the Freeform app, Freeform.com, On Demand and Hulu.
And of course I had to get a picture with Freeform’s newest star, Burkely Duffield:
