Shadowhunters was one of my favorite new shows in 2016! I can’t wait for it to return on Monday, January 2, 2017!
The Shadowhunters TV show is based on the bestselling young adult fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. I have met her twice at the last two NYC Comic Con’s and she was a delight to talk to about this series! I explained to her that I had a son in middle school and that the Shadowhunter TV series was perfect for his age group, and then gave this dad and his son something to discuss every week after we watched the show. She was thrilled to hear it! I also shared with her that the diversity of the show was also something that hit home for us. And I am not referring to the gay couple, I am referring to the Jewish vampire!
“Shadowhunters” follows 18-year-old Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. When her mother Jocelyn is kidnapped, Clary is thrown into the world of demon hunting with mysterious Shadowhunter Jace and her best friend, Simon. Now living among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves, Clary begins a journey of self-discovery as she learns more about her past and what her future may hold.
I spoke to the entire cast for the second year in a row and it was an absolute thrill. It was even more interesting to note the maturity of the actors and actresses this year versus last! I first met the cast before the show had premiered. I did tell them that this was going to be a huge hit show, and it was great to see them a year later when this was proven true! The self confidence of the cast was far more evident this year, and rightly so. And spoiler alert, our supernatural friends will be mingling with us mortals this season in the hot spot called the Hunter’s Moon!
Dominic Sherwood (Jace Wayland) and Katherine McNamara (Clary Fray). Their relationship was heating up until a certain bombshell hit!
Matthew Daddario (Alec Lightwood) and Harry Shum, Jr. (Magnus Bane). The hottest gay couple on TV.
Emeraude Toubia (Isabelle Lightwood) and Isaiah Mustafa (Luke Garroway)! Emeraude’s character is one of my teenage son’s favorites! And Isaiah is one of mine!
And last, but not least, my favorite Jewish vampire, Alberto Rosende (Simon Lewis). Yes, I am showing off that a month after Comic Con we were at a local party together! He was thrilled to hear about how it hit home for my family that his character was Jewish (and a vampire)!
I can’t recommend this show enough for every tween/teen and older, and their parents. The supernatural content is fresh, the subject matter is diverse, and the action is non-stop. And the cast are all terrific!
And the creator of it all, Cassie Clare! We chatted about the details in the show such as the Jewish Mezuzah on Simons house. I am happy to tell her every year how wonderful her series is for family bonding!
