Arrival is a different type of Alien movie then we are used to. Earth is not under attack this time! Finally, they come in peace. We think. We hope. We are not sure.
When mysterious spacecrafts touch down across the globe, an elite team – lead by expert linguist Louise Banks (Amy Adams) – is brought together to investigate. As mankind teeters on the verge of global war, Banks and the team race against time for answers – and to find them, she will take a chance that could threaten her life, and quite possibly humanity.
I have been reading science fiction voraciously since I was 10 years old. I do not consider myself an expert by any means, but I did notice many concepts that I had not encountered in the years I have read this genre. Firs, the matter of fact way these spacecraft’s showed up around the Earth felt like something that we have been waiting for in our real world. They just appeared one day, and they stayed innocuous. They made no startling moves to upset us Earth folk. Around the world 12 different nations attempted to figure out how to communicate with this alien species that was quite different from us, they looked different, and they breathed different gases than us.
Their spaceships were also something that we have not seen before. Innocuous. Almost quiet in their design. And deceiving in a gravitational sort of way (see the movie to find out what I mean!).
The most remarkable aspect of this movie to me was the way we tried to learn their language. Their written language is nothing like ours. Shapes represent words, ideas, and possibly thoughts. The way Amy Adams, as a linguist, starts the process of managing to discover how to break the code of their language is remarkable, and one example of the incredible writing of this movie.
It seemed to me to be an insurmountable task to try to communicate with this alien species. Nothing vocal for us to decipher, and what looked like squid ink as their written language.
This movie tested the boundaries of science fiction movies as we used to know them. I thought this would be a slow moving movie that might not hold my interest. It was not. This movie is science fiction at it’s best, here to teach us, not to scare.
