This is a compensated post on behalf of Lysol Products.
I recently attended an event where the folks on the Lysol team talked to us about germs and staying healthy throughout the school year, and all year. There is so much information that I did not know about germs before this! I was thrilled to get educated at the Lysol Germ School!
Our first teacher was Joseph Rubino, a “germologist.” He chatted about how we get sick, so we can work harder to prevent it. With back to school season upon us I do not want my son missing any school, and I do not want to be sick and unable to take care of my family. Bad germs are the enemy, and there are three types, viruses, bacteria and fungi. Each operates differently, for example, viruses need to be inside living cells in order to grow and reproduce, bacteria can reproduce both inside our outside the body as they cause infections, and fungi which live in damp and warm places and are not as big a concern as the first two.
Germs travel many different ways, once we learn their modes of transport, we can better stop them in their tracks with Lysol disinfectant spray and wipes! Half the rooms in my home have one or the other. Also, germs can travel easily, either by getting shot into the air when someone sneezes, being left on a surface, direct contact with a person, from a mosquito, and by contaminants in food and water.
My son has been taught to sneeze into the crook of his elbow. This prevents the germs from being on his hands and transferred to others directly, or on surfaces for other people to catch. Thankfully almost all students now protect each other by sneezing this way because:
-22 million school days are missed each year due to illness.
-Kids can touch and retouch more than 300 surfaces in just 30 minutes.
-The flu virus can live on hard surfaces for up to 48 hours.
-Americans suffer from 1 billion colds each year!
It is amazing that we have survived! And cold and flu season begins soon after school starts, did you know they are very different ailments?
In general, the flu is worse than a cold. Symptoms such as fever, body aches, extreme tiredness, and dry cough are more common and intense.
Colds and Flu are caused by viruses. They cannot be treated with antibiotics. Antiviral drugs have limitations and must be given with precautions.
Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations.
Our second classroom instructor was a pediatric consultant, Dr. Jennifer Zubler. I still can’t believe I went back to school before my son!
With Winter around the corner, there is also a big misconception: cold weather does not cause one to get sick! We tend to be indoors more and near other people, this increases germ transfer possibilities. The cold weather is an indirect cause, but the cold itself is not the cause. That is why disinfecting is even more important at this time of year!
We can slow the transfer of germs in several ways: good hand washing, by not sneezing into the air, stayng healthy with proper diet and exercise, and by not sending our kids to school when they are sick! Even to get credit for the day by sending them in for a few hours! Lysol disinfectant spray and wipes are also a terrific way to keep germs at bay, and I am glad I learned to use these products on my son’s sports equipment as well:
And, now Lysol and Box Tops for Education have an exclusive partnership! Lysol is the only cleaning product that participates in the Box Tops for Education program! We have been participating in this program for eight years, since my son started Kindergarten. Thank-you Lysol!
