I don’t know anything about Pokémon Go, and I do not care. BUT, it was visiting day at sleep-away camp and after catching up on texts and Instagram’s, my son jumped right in.
That my son even know about this new game app was wild to me as there is no electronic media allowed at camp. Yet, the counselors all were addicted to playing, and the campers gained all Pokémon Go knowledge through osmosis! That is how our electronic society works!
And I encouraged this play! I told my son to take screen shots so I could write a post! After all, this is his third year away and I have always had a blog assignment for him on visiting day!
And his other dad did not get it. And that was the trick, he did not have to get it, it was just a way to bond with our son! Sometimes parents have to get off of their high horse and play the way the kid wants to play!
There was a Pokémon Go on the car, there was one on my soda at lunch, inside the restaurant! And when we stopped at the beach, and sat on the bench with old people, we knew that the group of four young men working their way over to us were looking for a Pokémon, my son claimed to send out a beacon!
We had one day with our son in seven weeks. I wanted to make it count. One of the ways I accomplished this was to participate in the activity that he wanted to play. I also gave him some iTunes money for some music and split a lobster with him. Parenting is all about marketing! He got everything he wanted and thought he needed from daddy Mitch, I am still golden!
What a great way to connect!
Oh my, I just saw on TV what this is all about, kids could get hurt, they walk out into traffic. Not sure about this game?
Sometimes we learn new things to connect with our kids and grandkids. If it is the Pokémon game or an another activity, it is all about spending time together. Glad you had such a fun day.
I’m sort of playing it, again just to do something with the teens – that’s the glue, right?
You’re an awesome dad! Absolutely right that you have to make that day with your son count. I’ve been playing Pokemon Go with my 10yo and we are having a great time!
Great job I keep asking myself what is wrong with me cause I do not get it.
I’m trying to get my daughter interested in that – I think it’d be fun! 🙂
My 12 year old is really into Pokemon right now. That’s what he will be doing when we are on vacation next week…..looking for new specimen!
I’ve heard so much about this game but haven’t tried it personally. Don’t see what the hype is all about.
that’s awesome i dont have enough room on my phone to download it lol which is good for me lol. i dont have all the money to put into gas if i went driving very far to catch them.
lol. Love that you say “parenting is all about marketing!” too funny! Glad you had a good day with your son catching all of the pokemon! 🙂
Time spend with children doing the things they love is always time well spent. Great Job!!
LOL… I thought I hit post comment, now I am not sure. Anyway I was just saying that it’s great to take time out of our busy schedules to spend it with out children doing exactly what they like to do.
Have a great rest of the week!
It’s good to be back 🙂
My girls are all into this as well. Such a great excuse to get out and exercise.
so how many have you caught :). We enjoy this game as well and always try to be careful whenever we go out looking for some pokemon 🙂
Totally agree with you on this. Get off that high horse and learn. I’ve been told I am friends with my kids and should not be. My kids tell me stuff many kids don’t tell their parents, I’m thankful for this. I have seen Pokemon for the past 10-15 years however long it has been out, I didn’t really watch much of it but I know it enough to know I was okay with it. I kept trying to go on walks with the kids but none wanted to go until this game came out. My 19 yr old (getting ready to join the military) uploaded it to his phone and asked me to walk with him. I of course jumped at the chance. Sometimes you need to meet in the middle even, find the things they are interested in and go with it. Love that you two were able to bond with your son, may it continue. ) Those teen years can be tough, currently going through it with my 16 yr old daughter and next week my younger daughter turns 13. I’m hanging in there. 🙂 Have fun with Pokemon!
Connecting with the kids is always great. Pokomon go is the new fad but kids and adults must be aware there are those taking advantage of it making it dangerous. We need not let a few spoil for the masses by being aware.
You’re a good dad Mitch.
