I previewed this fifth movie in the Ice Age saga, and it was hilarious. And, filled with even more celebrity voices! Everyone wanted to participate in this newest installment in the series!
Cast: Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, Seann William Scott, Josh Peck, Simon Pegg, Keke Palmer, Jennifer Lopez, Queen Latifah, Adam Devine, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Max Greenfield, Jessie J, Nick Offerman, Wanda Sykes, Stephanie Beatriz, Michael Strahan, Melissa Rauch, Neil deGrasse Tyson. (I love Wanda Sykes’s work, and she was perfect as a grandma in this movie.)
This is the fifth Ice Age movie, and they came up with a new idea to keep the series fresh. I cannot give any spoilers, but the premise for this movie was foreshadowed in the very first movie! I was so happy they showed us that earlier scene so we could see for ourselves how they set themselves up in the first movie without planning to do so!
Scrat’s epic pursuit of the elusive acorn catapults him into the universe where he accidentally sets off a series of cosmic events that transform and threaten the Ice Age World. To save themselves, Sid, Manny, Diego, and the rest of the herd must leave their home and embark on a quest full of comedy and adventure, traveling to exotic new lands and encountering a host of colorful new characters.
I love that Scrat! And I suspect we will never see him catch that acorn! And, I met him, here we are with Director Michael Thurmeier:
We spoke with Michael and two of the cast members about the movie. He introduced the part of the very first movie which became a part of the premise for this one. That was a lot of research to realize that scene was there for them to refer back to! Anything more would be a spoiler, although there is a big hint in the above picture!
Small spoiler, Peaches, daughter of Manny and Ellie, is engaged to be married. I was right there with Michael as he was talking about how this made him think about when he would be letting his own daughters go in the future. I think about that all the time, we don’t do all this hard work as parents to have them leave us!
We also spoke to Keke Palmer and Jesse Tyler Ferguson! It was quite wonderful and intimate. Keke is reprising her role as Peaches , and she shared that it was a tough transition to go from a kid to a woman! In Mastodon terms of course:
“The second time around, I really wanted to expand even more so in this animation world because, as you said, it’s not as easy as, you know, we think going in. And so, I really had to learn how to put the emotion on the voice. And I had to do a lot of that with this one because there is a big thing going on with Peaches. Peaches is getting ready to get married. And she has got to let her parents know it’s okay to let her go. And so, that was all really exciting, learning how to really express that emotion through my voice and not just saying the words. And that was a fun process. Hopefully, I got it right.”
It was also fascinating to listen to Keke describe how she had to go back and forth working on this role, because she was also on Broadway in Cinderella! The movie comes out this weekend, but the reality is, it started filming almost two years ago, while Keke was also working on Broadway.
And Jesse told us it was his first animated movie! I had to jokingly ask him if it was weird that the character of Elle’s boyfriend was also the same guy who plays his niece’s boyfriend on his sitcom! He never realized it of course, because, as I always remind my readership, actors do not meet each other, or act off of each other when filming an animated movie. I am always impressed by how incredible the editing is, we never would imagine that none of the actors did their voice work with each other.
Jesse wondered out loud how he got the role, and Director Mike shared and said Jesse had a unique voice. Of course it goes perfectly with his character in the movie as you will see and hear, the Shangri Llama!
Jesse shared how he just jumped in, never having done animation before:
“I think we just sort of jumped in, and there was maybe some fine tuning. I did blow out my voice on my very first recording session. We had to cut that half short.”
There was a lot of yelling. Part of the character of course! There was also a bar. Jesse thought it was there for him to hold onto when he got very emotional. I love listening to these actors talk about how they do the voices for animated work, how they get creative, and how they try to throw themselves into the role, while standing alone in a booth!
And then I got to be a fanboy and take pictures with these great folks!
