Starting from the Orlando Airport, I am going to tell you the best way to travel to, from, and in between Walt Disney World!
1.The cheapest way from the airport to Disney property is to take the Magical Express. Of course you must be staying on Disney World property to be eligible for this free ride. The Swan and Dolphin, while on Disney property, are not Disney owned and are not included.
(We had very little time to get to my conference so I hired a car service before I left NYC. They held a sign with my name at baggage claim and had a car waiting for me in the secret area of the terminal! I was afraid to take a taxi at rush hour as the price could have been astronomical if we hit traffic. I did not have an extra minute to spare for my registration time so I could not take the Magical Express. NOTE: do not take Uber from the airport! Unless you take my advice at the end of this article! Also, the car service that I book from home will stop at a grocery store if you want to go food shopping before you get to your hotel. Many people do this to save money on food purchases at Walt Disney World.)
2. Walt Disney World provides free buses to and from their hotels to the parks. I took this picture when we returned to our hotel one evening, I had never seen this before, updating the buses en-route to your hotel is a great upgrade for the Disney transportation system!
3. We prefer to stay around Crescent Lake (Yacht Club, Beach Club, Boardwalk, Swan and Dolphin are the choices in this area!). We walk to Epcot, and take a quick boat to Hollywood Studios. This leaves only two parks for us to have to take a bus to!
4. We just missed the bus to Animal Kingdom This is a bus route that also stops at a water park first. I used my Uber app, they arrived in two minutes. It took 8 minutes to get us to Animal Kingdom instead of over 30, and it cost $7 for the three of us. This is my new preferred way to travel!
5. I cancelled my Swan Hotel reservation in person and then waited for the Magic Kingdom bus. I investigated and found that a cab would cost $22 plus tip, and Uber was $6-$9. I called Uber and ended up across the lake from the Magic Kingdom for $7. That stunk! We had to wait with the throngs of people who needed to take the ferry across the water!
But wait! Another driver explained to me that I should ask to go to the Contemporary Hotel and get off right after they pull onto the property. The walk to Magic Kingdom is quick form that point, and this is how you avoid the car drop off far from the park!
6. We took the Disney buses home every night. It can be a mob scene, but this is what worked best for us. We stay late, near to closing, and were lucky and did not have to wait for extra buses.
7. I had the previously mentioned car service take us back to the airport. Never again. My friend paid $25 for an Uber. You can take Magic Express for free, but we like every minute we can get at the parks, this buys us an extra hour.
8. Uber from the airport is too expensive. One driver told us the way to reduce that is to take a free shuttle to one of the hotels that are adjacent to the airport and then call an Uber from there. Perhaps a little time consuming, but could be quicker than the Magical Express.
Uber turned out to be a great alternative for those of us too anxious to wait for the Disney buses. Uber is much cheaper than a cab, literally a third of the price. But, using the Disney buses is free, don’t forget that if you have the time to wait!
