One young woman realizes how dark the city can really be when she learns the truth about her past in the series premiere of “Shadowhunters” on Tuesday, January 12th at 9:00 – 10:00 p.m., EST/PST. ABC Family is becoming Freeform in January 2016.
Based on the bestselling young adult fantasy book series The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare, “Shadowhunters” follows Clary Fray, who finds out on her birthday that she is not who she thinks she is but rather comes from a long line of Shadowhunters – human-angel hybrids who hunt down demons. Now thrown into the world of demon hunting after her mother is kidnapped, Clary must rely on the mysterious Jace and his fellow Shadowhunters Isabelle and Alec to navigate this new dark world. With her best friend, Simon, in tow, Clary must now live among faeries, warlocks, vampires and werewolves to find answers that could help her find her mother. Nothing is as it seems, including her close family friend Luke, who knows more than he is letting on, as well as the enigmatic warlock Magnus Bane, who could hold the key to unlocking Clary’s past.
This is my genre. I love fantasy/supernatural shows. After all, I started with Dark Shadows at the age of 10 in 1969! This is also the genre that my son gravitates towards when reading for school, and Cassandra’s books are the perfect challenging level for my avid 7th grade reader. I started him on the book series so he could get ready for the TV series with me, I look forward to bonding with him about the series. Here he is posing with the first book in the series, and here I am posing with the beautiful author, Cassandra Clare!
I met Miss Clare at the Shadowhunters interviews at the NYC ComicCon! It was wonderful to sit down with the cast and writers to discuss this upcoming series.
Producer McG shared that there will be surprises that are not in the book, so don’t get complacent if you have read the series! They are also starting off with a clean slate from the feature length movie that was in the theaters a few years ago. This is a big series of books that could not cover enough ground in one movie, I look forward to this series going on for many years!
The TV show will also be a little more adult than the book series. The chronology of events in the TV series will also not follow the book exactly, but it will be good for setting up future seasons!
And I got to hang out with some old Friends! Harry Shum, Jr. from Glee with Matthew Dadddario, and Isaiah Mustafa, the Old Spice guy with Showrunner Ed Decter!
I also suggest, for those interested, following the cast on their social media pages. I reviewed some of the cast’s Instagram accounts and saw some behind the scenes footage! The most interesting was a 15 second video of one of the cast doing a flip against the wall, in practice. Very cool to see:

“Shadowhunters” is produced by Constantin Film and executive-produced by Ed Decter and McG. McG will also direct the first episode. The series stars Katherine McNamara as Clary Fray, Dominic Sherwood as Jace Wayland, Alberto Rosende as Simon, Emeraude Toubia as Isabelle Lightwood, Matthew Daddario as Alec Lightwood, Isaiah Mustafa as Luke Garroway, and Harry Shum Jr. as Magnus Bane.
These folks were a great bunch to chat with:
And I hope I took enough pictures for all the future articles I get to share with you!
“Beyond the Shadows: The Making of Shadowhunters” will give fans of The Mortal Instruments book series a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the making of the television show, which will include the cast talking about how they landed their roles, a glimpse into how the cast got into fighting shape, and for viewers who are new to the Shadow World, the cast explains what “Shadowhunters” is all about. “Beyond the Shadows: The Making of Shadowhunters” includes interviews with “Shadowhunters” cast members Katherine McNamara, Dominic Sherwood, Harry Shum Jr., Alberto Rosende, Matthew Daddario, Emeraude Toubia and Isaiah Mustafa, as well as Showrunner Ed Decter and Executive Producer McG.
