Lily Tomlin is Elle Reid. Elle has just gotten through breaking up with her girlfriend when Elle’s granddaughter Sage unexpectedly shows up needing $600 bucks before sundown. Temporarily broke, Grandma Elle and Sage spend the day trying to get their hands on the cash as their unannounced visits to old friends and flames end up rattling skeletons and digging up secrets.
Lily Tomlin portrays a very cool and super down to earth Grandma, so cool she just takes her granddaughter out to look for the money needed for the abortion appointment for that evening. Sage feels more comfortable with her Grandma then her mother, see the movie and you will know why.
And a lot is explained during the scene where Lily tries to ask for money from her ex, played by the dashing Sam Elliott. I don’t want to get too literary, but the movie reminded me of a book I read decades ago, A Day In The Life of Ivan Denisovich. A tremendous amount of action, drama, angst, and family situations, occur in this film which basically covers the activity of 12 hours.
Lily’s other ex, a woman, also comes up a lot, it seems everyone is still mourning her loss.
