I don’t know about raising a child anywhere but in NYC, so I can tell you that this type of site is crucial for finding the right school for children here. In fact there is information here for finding the right school for almost any location and any age, finding the right school has become far more complicated than when I was growing up outside of NYC.

Competition for seats in NYC schools, public and private are at an extreme premium. People start when their children are born! Yes, those rumors are true. We did not, we were lucky enough to have a top notch day care/pre-K in our complex and we were zoned for a top public school. Top except it was never a great fit for my rambunctious son.

My son did not fit into a “box” as his elementary school would have liked. He did fine, he made it into a fine middle school, but with further investigation we might have been able to do a better job finding a school that would have met the needs of a boy who needed a lot more activity than his school provided.

And what about middle school? Growing up I went from one zoned school to another and it was all set up for us in suburbia. Not in NYC, and not in the suburbia of my in-laws. In Manhattan there are massive application processes and test taking necessary to apply to middle school, and then high school. It is exhausting and troubling for a first time parent in this system. I have relied upon the parents that I know with older kids, but I got lucky in that regard. And I can always do more research, especially for our next level, vetting High Schools!

My son is entering 7th grade next month. His grades and test scores are what are needed for his High School applications. Choices in Manhattan at that level are overwhelming, I am going to need this Noodle service now, just to be able to figure out our next step for our son and what school is best suited to his needs and learning interests. I am exhausted at the thought, but happy that I now have this new resource to support my journey for the best school for my son!

Before I attempt the HS search, I am happy to use Noodle’s tutoring search, we spent all of l6th grade looking for the right ELA tutor, and we never found the right one! This year I am also hedging my bets by adding a part time math tutor. As I said, my sons grades and Common Core test scores in 7th grade are what High Schools will look at to determine his eligibility for their programs, my job is to set him up for as much success as possible.
