“The next evolution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe brings a founding member of The Avengers to the big screen for the first time with Marvel Studios’ “Ant-Man.” Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, master thief Scott Lang must embrace his inner hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym, protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.”
Marvel’s “Ant-Man” stars Paul Rudd as Scott Lang aka Ant-Man, Evangeline Lilly as Hope Van Dyne, Corey Stoll as Darren Cross aka Yellowjacket, Bobby Cannavale as Paxton, Michael Peña as Luis, Judy Greer as Maggie, Tip “Ti” Harris as Dave, David Dastmalchian as Kurt, Wood Harris as Gale, Jordi Mollà as Castillo and Michael Douglas as Hank Pym.
Peyton Reed directs Marvel’s “Ant-Man” with Kevin Feige producing and Louis D’Esposito, Alan Fine, Victoria Alonso, Michael Grillo, Edgar Wright and Stan Lee serving as executive producers. The story is by Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish and the screenplay is by Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish and Adam McKay & Paul Rudd. Marvel’s “Ant-Man” delivers a high-stakes, tension-filled adventure on July 17, 2015.
I previewed the movie on Tuesday eve. Turns out there were a lot of ants in the movie, not just Paul Rudd as an ant sized hero. And they almost stole the show! The work that must have gone into the coordination of the ant movements, and the required knowledge behind all of the ant’s actions were incredible. Having been on Disney/Marvel press trips, there is no doubt in my mind that a team of entomologists were on hand for this work, These movies are made with incredible precision and exact information about whatever subject is being highlighted. One of my favorite things about Disney movies, because I know the authenticity is as close to 100% as any movie studio can achieve:
“Marvel did a lot of research into ant behaviors and what the different species of ants could bring to the movie in terms of what filmmakers needed for the heist. For instance, the Paraponera clavataor bullet ants have a very painful sting and resemble dinosaurs in the movie; the Solenopsisor fire ants are like architects as they can link together and form bridges and rafts to help Ant Man; and the male Camponotus carpenter ants can fly, providing Ant-Man with a helpful mode of transportation. ”
Paul Rudd was terrific. I was skeptical before I saw this movie because I could not see Mr. Rudd in the role of superhero. But a superhero he was, with all the wise cracks you would expect from Mr. Rudd! His sense of humor was ever present in this film, and also a perfect fit. He hit just the right stride between serious and humorous without turning the movie into a comedy. And he really did give the impression that anyone with the right combination of wits and determination could pull off the super hero role, with the right accoutrements of course, which in this case was a suit that shrinks one down to the size of an ant! And his ant life did not look easy!
There were also many Marvel references related to several of the other Marvel movies. The fact that the whole Marvel Universe is interrelated is something I find Marvel-ous! I love these types of references, I thoroughly enjoy how each of the movies are connected, and maybe interconnected, from the looks of the Easter Egg we saw at the very end of the credits, but do not expect a spoiler from me!
The supporting cast was excellent as well, I especially liked Michael Pena! A talented man and a useful side-kick, he was quite versatile and funny in the movie, in fact, everyone did an excellent job. Michael Douglas and Evangeline Lilly did a great job as father and daughter, never an easy relationship, but one which grew, which added a depth to the movie.
I also took my spouse to the movie and he thought it was terrific, and he is the critical one in the family! This is definitely the hot action movie of Summer, 2015!
