From Disney comes two-time Oscar® winner Brad Bird’s “Tomorrowland,” a riveting mystery adventure starring Academy Award® winner George Clooney. Bound by a shared destiny, former boy-genius Frank (Clooney), jaded by disillusionment, and Casey (Britt Robertson), a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity, embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space known only as “Tomorrowland.” What they must do there changes the world—and them—forever.
Featuring a screenplay by “Lost” writer and co-creator Damon Lindelof and Brad Bird, from a story by Lindelof & Bird & Jeff Jensen, “Tomorrowland” promises to take audiences on a thrill ride of nonstop adventures through new dimensions that have only been dreamed of.
My son and I previewed the movie this past Monday. I was not inspired by the trailers and did not have have high expectations, but as always with Disney, I was blown away by the production.
I grew up reading every science fiction book I could lay my hands on, so watching this movie was a visual treat! This was one of the most visually appealing science fiction movies I have seen in a very long time, and the story line matched the visuals. Sure, there is plenty of great sci-fi out there, but most of them rely on crazy looking aliens. This movie was all about us and what we can create.
And it all starts simply enough at the NY World’s Fair of 1964-5. One that I attended many times as a five and six year old, as we lived only a half hour away. My son and I were thrilled to hear the familiar music of the Carousel of Progress, a ride that we were just on two weeks ago! And, I rode the original “It’s a Small World After All” ride here! The ride that in this movie turns into a Pirates of the Caribbean type journey to take us to Tomorrowland!
There were a couple of dark moments in the movie, but they were minimal and I would not let that deter me from taking everyone except the smallest kids to this movie. Some of the younger kids may need to have some parts explained, but overall this movie is good for all ages.
And this is a movie with a heroine, Britt Robertson, who I first saw on the TV show Under the Dome! She is a great role model for our young women.
But wait! Here what a nine year old has to say about the movie and all the excitement that followed after the Premiere, read it on Fandango.com! And for the DIY crowd, there is a great tutorial on Fandango Family on how to make your own Tomorrowland t-shirts by Kersey Campbell who blogs daily at “And We Play!”
