It was just two Hanukkahs ago when Jewish entrepreneur Neal Hoffman sought out a way for Jewish children and parents to have their own Jewish-themed traditions… and just like that, The Mensch on a Bench was born! The Mensch on a Bench was last Hanukkah’s mega hit selling out in just 10 days, and is this year’s family must-have!
Mensch on a Bench tells the story of “Mosche the Mensch,” who watched over the Jewish people during the great miracle of Hanukkah. The 12” doll holds the Shammash (leader) candle and needs to be moved each night to watch over the Menorah. It introduces children to the traditions of Hanukkah and teaches them to be good and honorable people…Mensches. The package also includes a hardcover storybook, in which Hoffman has added new pages to teach children the Hanukkah prayers and how to play dreidel. There is even a page to write down their favorite memories of each holiday season!
We are a mixed household. My spouse has some kind of small electric tree for his holiday, and my son and I light Hanukkah candles for our observance every year. You can see the two Menorahs we use, they are on our credenza all year, and oh my goodness did I forget to clean the wax last year!
I am thrilled we get to add this to our holiday celebration decorations this December! The candle that the Mensch (Man) is holding is the candle we use to light the other candles at the holiday. We add a candle every night for a total of eight nights to celebrate the miracle centuries ago when one night’s oil was found after the war, that miraculously lasted eight nights, the amount of time needed to make new oil.
Happy Hannukah!
