For Asians all around the world, including Asian-Americans, Lunar New Year not only celebrates the beginning of the year but also the ending of winter and the anticipated arrival of spring. It is one of the most important holidays celebrated in Asian countries. My spouse and I started celebrating this holiday years ago. I had a friend in the airline business and her company used to sponsor the parade in San Francisco every year. The biggest parade outside of Asia! She was the point person so twice we made it out west to join her as her guests. Celebrations with amazing Asian food, great seats at the parade: an amazing several day long celebration! We started to learn the significance from the other guests at this event, and have continued to learn more.
Now we celebrate the Lunar New Year in NYC with our son! We head downtown to what is known as the NYC “Chinatown” and watch the parade almost every year. The celebration is loud, raucous and extremely colorful! Many folks of all ages show up in dragon costumes, some with several people inside to give the illusion of a huge dragon! It is a wonderful celebration in a popular immigrant neighborhood where all of New York comes together in the crowded streets to share in the celebration. New York City is truly a melting pot, and this is one of the holidays where it is best illustrated!
