I was at an event a few days after I dropped my son off at sleep away camp. I met the Crayola folks and saw the above kit. My eyes glazed over at the thought of this beautiful set of colored pencils and markers. And not just because multiple packs of these items are requested every September by my son’s homeroom and other teachers.
The last thing my son grabbed as we raced out the door to camp this Summer was his pack of colored pencils that he had just taken home after graduation from elementary school. When we left him at camp he was sitting on his new bed with this same set of colored pencils and had started drawing. I have showcased his art talents on the blog many times. Between drawing and duct tape, he can fill our apartment with art work in the span of of just one day!
The last picture in my mind of my son (who I am missing terribly), is him with 12 colored pencils, and I see the above set. It didn’t even register that it was for designing clothes, all I saw was my son’s new favorite art tool!
Then Crayola came out with the above Car Collection! More boy oriented, although in today’s society, men are women’s fashion designers, and women can be race car drivers. Pick the set you want because the bottom line is this is an amazing set of art tools! It is the Car set that works best for my son!
As an aside, I live in NYC and we have two major art shops that my son takes us through, almost weekly, asking for everything they sell. We had actually been in the Blick Art Supply store on 6th Avenue a few months ago perusing their colored pencils sets. The prices were outrageous, even with the coupon I had in hand. I don’t know if those are fancier or sturdier pencils, but I do know that for most everyone, spending money for boutique art supplies versus this Crayola set is a no-brainer. I am getting excellent quality and spending far less money.
Back to the set! My son was thrilled when he saw this and started drawing immediately. He drew several cars from the enclosed booklet.
And then his car came alive!
We downloaded the accompanying app, available on Android and IOS, “Crayola Car.” He scanned in his car:
He tricked out his car:
And then he raced his car:
He loves this. He created the experience with this Crayola set, from start on blank paper, to driving on my iPad. This is exactly the type of item that motivates my son to practice skills that are preferable to me over watching TV!
And of course the Fashion set has its own app as well.
I predict this will be a must have item this holiday. It is definitely going in my Holiday gift guide. This is a gift that will challenge the children, keep them captivated with all the possibilities in the design world (car or fashion), and then let them see the fruits of their labors in the virtual world. That reinforcement is the greatest motivator for the kids!

Your post made me realize how much ingenuity and invention goes into this virtual design tool. I’m particularly intrigued by the Vwoollo Hoodie you mentioned; it sounds like a must-have for any fashionista.
