I would like to preface this post by saying I started watching this show because I was headed to interviews with the cast. For the sake of full disclosure, I continue to watch this show because I find it very funny and entertaining. The show is very good and just received two 2014 Teen Choice Award nominations! One is in the Choice Summer TV Show category!
How exciting it was to meet and chat with the show’s star Emily Osment! Years ago my son and I figured out that Hannah Montana was not a girly show, so we watched it all the time! I could not believe how Emily Osment has grown into a young woman, it feels like we just saw her as a little teenager a few weeks ago!
Young & Hungry is based on the life of a food blogger from San Francisco. That is the first reason I love the show, I cannot help but wonder when my life as a blogger will hit the big screen, the success of one blogger is a success for us all! Emily plays Gabi, a role fashioned after the food blogger although the food blogging is only slightly mentioned. I liked how Emily shared that the role is perfect for her because she is like her character, she is not afraid to make mistakes because that is how you learn and grow. Such wise words from such a young lady! She also said sometimes it is best to not have a filter, if you are able to then learn from the outcome. And congrats are in order, Emily received a Teen Choice Award nomination for Choice Summer TV Star: Female!
One of Emily’s co-stars is Aimee Carrero pictured above with us. She is Gabi’s roommate and the voice of reason for Gabi! She was a delight to chat with. We asked her, why TV. She shared that while in school she was working on a model UN piece and she thought being on TV she could effect change, as an artist that was the way she could reach a wider group. I love her attitude!
Jonathan Sadowski plays Josh Kaminski, a tech millionaire. His publicist (on the show!) wanted him to have a famous chef on staff, but they ended up with Gabi. That difference of opinion made for a few funny scenes in the first few episodes. Jonathan came hobbling in as he had just broken his ankle a few weeks earlier. He told us he was an amateur magician and occasionally worked on shows in Las Vegas, so playing this nerdy, hard working character was a little bit different than who he is in real life. Not the hard working part, just the nerd part.
I have warned you before, every time there is a show with an out gay character I will thank the producers on behalf of my family. Rex Lee is the publicist for Josh and like many great shows today, not a character anywhere near being in the closet. My son has two dads and showing gay characters in the mainstream helps me to show my son we are just as much a part of the fabric of American life as anyone else. Sorry to get a little heavy here,. but this is important to us. I am 55 and waited a long time to see this type of progress reflected on TV!
We know Rex from Entourage and more recently, Suburgatory. When he shared that he felt that every time he got a job it might be his last acting job and he might have to leave the business, we said NO! Yet another sweetheart from the show, and naturally very funny!
Lastly, here I am with show Creator and Executive Producer David Holden. He was great, he said that he loved the opportunity to have a show with such diversity, not that he was looking for that when casting, it just happened to work out that way! Rex shared that David had him in mind for the role when creating the show, that was an excellent choice! You can see David and I heavy in conversation here:
This was one of the most delightful mornings I have ever had. Hanging out at the breakfast table as each of the five stars chatted with us: it was very cozy and they were all warm and open with us bloggers. I speak from the heart when I tell you that it was a total pleasure! I will be repeating this enthusiasm next week as well, we did this with a second ABC Family show. Stay tuned!
Tune in Tonight at 8:00pm ET/PT on ABC Family. Jesse McCartney will be guest starring on this Wednesday’s (7/30) episode:
Disclosure: Disney invited me on this press trip and paid all of my expenses. No other compensation was received. All opinions are always 100% my own and honest. The event sounds like it was a really good time. I’ve actually not heard any buzz about this show, but it’s got my favorite character from the now defunct Suburbia in it, so it’s got to be great.
