Just in time for back-to-school, Alcon invites consumers to Get an A+ in Eye Care and help children in need get vision tests and corrective lenses. To participate simply ‘Like’ Alcon’s THE eyeSOLUTION on Facebook. For each ‘Like,’ Alcon will donate $1 (up to $50,000) to Kids Vision for Life (KVFL). The Facebook page will feature real kids being helped by this campaign, plus information on maintaining your own family’s eye health.
Research shows that 80 percent of a child’s learning before age 12 comes through their eyes, which means clear vision is the key to reading and learning. A child with clear vision can see a brighter future, but not every family can afford proper eye care. Children without the right vision correction may fall behind in school. This campaign will help to test and provide lenses for these children, giving them a better chance at succeeding in school.
I attended this event last week and was shocked at all the information they shared with us.
I had always thought the little vision test done in my pediatrician’s office once a year was sufficient to see if my child was seeing properly. Turns out it really isn’t enough, most kids should be going to an optometrist! My son happens to have great eyesight, he sees things far sooner than we do, so I am not really concerned. But for many children, there should be concern and more eye follow up.
One upsetting item that I learned is that many kids receive false diagnosis regarding their behavior when they are young. “He can’t read for a prolonged amount of time because he is too fidgety,” or “She can’t concentrate, she might have ADHD.” Did you know many times this happens simply because the child’s vision is not 20/20? Which means these issues can easily be corrected once they are properly diagnosed!
And that kid that acts out in class may just be over compensating because he is embarrassed that he can not read a paragraph out loud to the class like everyone else, because he cannot properly see the writing in the book!
For the second consecutive year, Jennie Garth has teamed up with Alcon to support Get an A+ in Eye Care. A mother of three, Garth has seen firsthand the importance of healthy vision at every age. “Through my work with KVFL and Alcon, and even within my own family, I’ve seen that uncorrected vision problems can keep kids from reaching their full potential,” said Garth. “But as parents, we also have to remember that it’s just as important to get our own eyes checked each year—I saw my own eye doctor recently and found that I needed vision correction!”
I urge everyone of you to click on the above Facebook link to donate $1 to help children across America see better! It hardly takes any effort on our behalf, and yet it can accomplish so much good!
