That is my son 10 years ago at his 1st Birthday Party extravaganza. That is how it is done in my spouse’s family!
My story is a little different than your usual dad story since my son has 2 dads and no mom. My role is closer to that of the mom because I am the stay at home parent, but still I am a dad. I am always happy to share a parenting story with you, and am doing so in this sponsored post.
One of the things I do better than the last generation (i.e., my dad) is communicate. Partly to get credit for my hard work, and partly to educate my son. He has seen me stand up for him in certain school situations and vocally defend him. I want him not to just feel supported, but also to see he is supported in a tangible way. I am not saying my dad would never do that, I am saying he would not discuss it. I try to use every possible situation as a learning experience with my son.
I love kids and waited a long time to have one. My son was adopted at birth when I was 44. As old as I am, I still remember how I felt growing up, and have many memories of my life in school. That is why one of my goals is to always give attention to my son’s friends. Even if it is a simple acknowledgement. I believe in a small way this helps to build self esteem. I am also silly and will make fart jokes with my son’s 5th grade peer group. I want them to feel comfortable with me as I believe later on during the teenage years all of these kids need to know there are adults that are “cool” and can be supportive. And this has nothing to do with my ego and wanting to be the ‘cool” dad. That was just a happy by-product!
I know I am lucky and get to be a stay at home dad who has the gift of more time with his child. Even if it is just watching him in the playground and chatting as we walk home. I am very cognizant of these moments with my 11 year old because I have no idea what the teenage years will bring, I am just hoping I am laying the groundwork for a continued supportive relationship.
And I am grateful for Oral-B and their sponsorship of this post! In my continued efforts for authenticity, before I talk about their new products and initiatives, I am going to remind you that I have worked with and posted about this brand many times in the last two years, and we love our Oral-B toothbrushes!
This year Oral-B is celebrating fatherhood’s little moments and the dads that bring smiles to their families every day.
Here is a bonding moment with my son:
We have not yet allowed a TV in his room as I feel we have a better shot at staying connected. Even if we all have to suffer through multi-generational video game competitions! For me, the power of dad, is the power to stay connected to your kids! And vice a versa kids, don’t forget Father’s Day, we love gifts like…
The new Oral-B 7000 BLACK is their most technologically advanced and sophisticated toothbrush yet. What a great Father’s Day gift! And to encourage you to buy one, I am thrilled to host a link for a $7 coupon, you know I love those!
In their second year of this Father’s Day program, P&G Oral Care has partnered with March of Dimes, a leading organization for healthy, happy families that celebrates mothers and fathers every day. They have joined forces with New York Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning, his father Archie and his daughter Ava – to celebrate fatherhood’s little moments. I am super excited about this as I will be getting to meet Mr. Manning (again!) next week and hope to have some pictures then!
I just upgraded my current electric Oral-B to the new 7000 BLACK because Oral-B is the worldwide leader in the toothbrush market and is taking oral care to the extreme with the introduction of its newest and most technologically advanced power toothbrush, the Oral-B 7000 BLACK. Disclosure: I partnered with Oral-B and Life of Dad, LLC for the #PowerofDad Father’s Day promotion and was compensated for my involvement.

You sound like an amazing dad and how lucky is your son that he gets two of them? My dad was never really around when I was young because he has always worked two full time jobs, but my mom spent time with us the way you do with your son and I guess I turned out ok 😉
PS – my boys don’t have a tv in their room either and won’t for a long time – if ever.
Glad to see you take such an active role in your sons life. The Dads of today are so much better than the Dads when I was raising kids. I even notice it with our kids. Dads take a more active role in life.
You sound like such a great dad! I’m glad you are so active in your son’s life. He’s very lucky for that. I was raised in a two parent home, but my dad never really took part in my life. I feel so sad for him (and for me) because he really missed out.
Thank you for sharing this about your family. You sound like a great dad and give your son everything that he needs. Its always good to try and stay connected with kiddies.
I love that ya’ll have video game wars!! Who is winning?! 🙂
Your son is so lucky to have you (and his other dad!) I hadn’t even considered this toothbrush for my husband, but now I’m definitely looking into it. (I love the travel case aspect.) Oh, and I appreciate that you haven’t allowed a tv in your son’s room. I never had one in my room until college – and I totally didn’t suffer. 🙂
Very cool product! And kudos to Oral-B for celebrating dads. Also, I agree with Jaime that no TV in the bedroom is so important.
That’s awesome that you get to be a sahd. My husband and I both work from home and it’s been so great, getting to be more a part of the day to day. Our oldest wants a tv in his room, but I’m afraid he’d never come out if we gave in!
I am fortunate to have a great Dad like you. I’m thankful he was present in my life growing up.
This is such a sweet post! Probably the best toothbrush post ever : ) Your son is so lucky to have such a great father as you. He’s going to appreciate it even more as he gets older!
I totally agree that communication is key and making his friends feel comfortable around you is a great idea. And, I love that the new Oral-B toothbrush comes in black, since my hubby would love the sleek look and design.
Communication is huge. My two daughters are adopted, too!
You waited until you were READY ready to have your son, and now you’re enjoying it to its fullest. I think that’s perfect, and for the record, keeping a TV out of his room is the way to go. 😉 My kids never had one in their rooms either. I wanted the family to be together, not divided.
Communication is so important! It’s great you’re doing all you can to be so involved!
You’re an amazing dad!!!!
You’re on the right track brother. It’s the engaged dad who gets it. And getting to know his friends is brilliant for so many reasons.
I can feel the passion you have as a dad! And I like that you continue to talk about you being authentic besides it being a sponsored post and you still wanted to tell your essence on fatherhood…not just Oral-B. Commendable!
Sounds like you have a good handle on parenting and being there for your son. I always made sure I had time for my kid’s friends too. My kids are adults now and their friends still come over to see us and keep in touch. This new Oral B looks awesome and I think it is time for my husband to have an upgrade.
Communication is of key importance with the state of the world we live in – I give you all kinds of kudos for recognizing this as an asset and as a skill set. I work on my communication skills constantly with my children. I worry about whether I am using the best efforts I can in communication with them, or if I am being too stoic or set in my ways to hear them and acknowledge what they are conveying. I love that toothbrush – and the fact that it comes with a carrying case, which is about half of our problem in a divorced household which also travels!
You are an amazing father and you have such a good handle on parenting. I could stand to learn a few things from you.
Thanks for the coupon. It’s time for new toothbrushes in my house.
Happy early Father’s Day to you – it sounds like you are doing a wonderful job raising your son! (Also, I’m on your side about the TV in the bedroom!)
The black toothbrush looks slick! We love Oral B in our house too.
I know I am lucky to be able to stay at home with my kids. It is hard a lot of days, but I wouldn’t trade it in for anything!
Thanks for sharing your parenting story. I love the chose to place spending time with your son as the most important priority. Great job.
what i great bond. so sweet
It’s so wonderful that you stay so connected with your son. You’re definitely laying the groundwork that will follow into the teen years. In my house, I’m a single mom so I’m pretty much both parents. I stink at the “dad” stuff. Sure, I can play video game like a champ, but I don’t know anything about sports or riding a bike, and I never grasped the fascination of fart jokes, lol. Still, I try!
We use Oral B electric toothbrushes too and we love them. I have not seen the black ones yet, I need one for my son I am going to check it out!
Happy Early Father’s Day! Thanks for being so open and honest!
I love your story. It can be hard to stay connected to kids and you sound like you are doing such an amazing job. Happy Early Fathers Day
Great idea to keep the TV in the living room. It really helps you keep the bond with your son.
Supporting our children is so important. It’s something that many parents forget about especially during the teen years.
You are so fortunate to get to be a stay at home dad. It doesn’t happen as often as SAHM. You sound like a wonderful, supportive father.
Happy Father’s Day a bit early 🙂 It sounds like the two of you have a really great relationship.
I love your dad story! What a wonderful boy to have such an amazing parent!
These fancy toothburshes must be a man-thing – my hubby was telling me about this haha. He needs to buy every new one he sees. I have yet to buy one, maybe I should get us each one?
You sound like an amazing Dad! And, you like to play video games too, bonus points! I’ll have to check out that fancy toothbrush for myself.
It is definitely a privilege to be able to be the stay at home parent. Being that support and having that communication with your son is so important and will only strengthen your relationship over time!
I’ve seen you around your son and you’re a great,fun-loving Dad. You have definitely done the wise thing of keep the TV out where everyone has access to it!
You are awesome and I think the idea of keeping the TV out of the bedroom is a good one. Happy early Father’s Day!
You’re an awesome dad! We only have 1 tv in the house actually. I intend to keep it that way for quite some time. I’m a big fan of forced socialization lol.
My 11 year old daughter does have a TV in her room, but it’s only allowed on after hours when it’s a non-school night and her brothers have been put to bed. I allow that her private time while I get my private Mom time. I loved reading this, You are a great parent and I think you parent with a similar mindset that I have. I love Oral B as well, great products!
I was a stay at home Mom and now I stay home with my Grandsons. You can’t be any luckier than that. I sure do enjoy the awesome relationships with my daughters who now trust me with their little sweetpeas.
I love hearing about you and your Son. It is evident you are a wonderful parent.
You really sound like a great dad. I hope I did that well with my son. His father passed away when he was 3 1/2 and it was tough being a single mom. Your son is very lucky to have 2 caring parents. Thank you for sharing!
It sounds like you really have it together with your kids. Communication is so very important and your children do need to know they are respected as an individual. Thank you so much for sharing these things in your life.
