1. Do you know your NYC Hurricane Zone? www.nyc.gov/knowyourzone
I lived through Hurricane Sandy. It was completely unexpected that we would have our lives upended for 5 full weekdays because of a storm. From day to day my spouse did not know if he could go to work, we did not know if our son could go to school, and we did not know when our apartment would have electricity. We were lucky, we could get hot food above 34th street where they had electricity, and then we headed to the in-laws apartment in Brooklyn, they never lost power in their particular area. We were also lucky, many of our friends and neighbors lost their cars, our garage was the western most and was spared flooding. We also know many folks on Staten Island who lost everything.
So we need to be prepared!
