The San Diego Zoo is a world famous zoo and one of the most important places to visit when in San Diego, California.
Our family are huge animal people and love visiting the zoo. we even have a membership to the New York Zoological Society. As New Yorkers, we are frequent visitors to the Bronx Zoo, also another favorite of ours.
I admit I was a little judgmental going to the San Diego Zoo. I had been there 30 years ago with a friend and remembered there being a lot of animals, but no special habitats. I find the Bronx Zoo to be world class, so my expectations were quite high.
Guess what? The San Diego Zoo blew me away. It was huge, there were many amazing habitats for the animals, and we could not finish a whole tour of the Zoo in 1 day. I wold plan another trip to Southern California just to be able to visit the San Diego Zoo over 2 days and then spend a third day at their Safari Park which is about 1/2 hours north of the Zoo.
And the least interesting part of our visit were the sleeping pandas, the reason many people visit this zoo.
My personal favorite though was the elephant exhibit. I counted 7 elephants in a large enclosure, although I think some males had to be separated from the herd as they were in “must.” Yes, we watch a lot of nature here. Unfortunately at my locl zoo they are phasing out the elephant exhibit which is down to 2 elephants. I stood watching these beautiful animals in San Diego for almost an hour.
The giraffe exhibit was also very impressive.
Again, this is a Zoo I would love to be able to return to and spend several days and slowly go through all of the exhibits. I think this one is on almost everyone’s bucket list, and from this most recent visit I could see why.

This is one of the best zoos out there (from what I have read and heard) glad you guys enjoyed yourselves! looks wonderful! would love to visit it one day w my kids!
