Mr. Peabody & Sherman
“Mr. Peabody (voiced by Ty Burrell, Emmy Award® Winner –Modern Family), the most accomplished dog in the world, and his mischievous boy Sherman (Max Charles –The Amazing Spiderman), use their time machine—the WABAC—to go on the most outrageous adventures known to man or dog. But when Sherman takes The WABAC out for a joyride to impress his friend Penny, they accidentally rip a hole in the universe, wreaking havoc on the most important events in world history. Before they forever alter the past, present and future, Mr. Peabody must come to their rescue, ultimately facing the most daunting challenge of any era: figuring out how to be a parent. Together, the time traveling trio will make their mark on history.”
We started off the interviewing by chatting with Rob Minkoff, the Director of Mr. Peabody & Sherman. He told us that this movie was 12 years in the making! He knew the characters as a kid and thought it would do well as a movie. Turns out that first script was never used, because by the time the movie was about to be done, those original writers went off to do a TV show! A whole new team was brought in and this current version bears little resemblance to that first version. And I loved that they had met with Tiffany Ward, who’s Jay Ward’s daughter. Jay Ward was the original producer of MR. Peabody & Sherman in the 1960’s!
We had an excellent time at this movie. How can you go wrong with Ty Burrell and a side of Stephen Colbert? We laughed out loud and gripped our seats. All 3 of us enjoyed the movie, and the best review I can give you is that we would see it again, and I mean now, before the DVD comes out.
And what a pleasure it was to sit down with some of the cast! I mean Ty Burrell of TV’s Modern Family fame! And yes, I did mention that his show helped make our family more accepted in America, so I was grateful. You can see him and I below in the group shot!
Ty was very funny explaining to us how it was to play a genius! He did relate to the parenting role his character had in the movie as he is an adopted dad of 2 young girls himself. That is a poignant part of the film, species not withstanding, the parental love that we all come to know and recognize, and how Mr. Peabody made this journey.
My favorite question for those actors, who are doing an animated movie: how is it to spend all your time acting alone in a booth? That is the reality, Ty and Max Charles (Sherman) actually only acted together for 1 day. You have no idea when you see an animated film that the actors were not standing opposite each other as they went through their scenes! These guys did an excellent job.
And Max Charles did a great job at holding his own in the interview. I was happy to see him again, I had just met him in November at the ABC studios with his co-star Jamie Gertz from “The Neighbors.” We asked him and Ty where they would go if they had a WABAC machine. Max said he would like to see some dinosaurs, but perhaps stay within the safe confines of the WABAC!
We also discussed how well this would play as a continuing series, perhaps we will soon see a recurring series! We all felt the way the movie illustrated history and historical figures in a humorous and fun fashion would be a great thing to have continued to keep inspiring the kids to want to learn more about the history of the world!
