Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Actress (Julie Andrews), Best Song (Chim Chim Cher-ee) and Best Special Visual Effects, Walt Disney’s Mary Poppins is a Supercalifraglilisticexpialidocious movie experience your family will enjoy over and over again.
”Practically perfect in every way,” Mary Poppins flies out of the windy London skies and into the home of two mischievous children. With the help of a carefree chimney sweep named Bert (Dick Van Dyke), the spirited nanny turns every chore into a game and every day into a ”Jolly Holiday.” Also starring David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns, Ed Wynn, Jane Darwell, Karen Dotrice and Matthew Garber. Directed by Robert Stevenson with songs by Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman.
I am so old I think I first saw Mary Poppins when it premiered in the movie theater! I remember loving this movie as a kid, and I was thrilled when I finally had a child of my own old enough to see the movie as well. It is incredibly entertaining. I received a free copy of this 50th Anniversary set for review, but truth be told, I already owned the DVD from a few years ago. All opinions are 100% honest and our own.
And because I have seen this movie many times over the course of my life, when I had the good fortune of seeing this on Broadway, I cried every time Mary Poppins sang. Memories of viewing this in my childhood flooded in.
This is especially touching for me on a personal level as I was privileged to visit the Walt Disney Family Museum in San Francisco earlier this year. I was able to grab a photo from the release of the movie premiere 50 years ago:
And if that was not amazing enough, there were several other photos that blew me away on that wall!
Dick van Dyke, Walt Disney, and Julie Andrews:
And thanks to Saving Mr. Banks (the recent movie that chronicles the story of how Walt Disney tried to buy the rights to the book so that he could make the movie, Mary Poppins), we all know P. L. Travers, the author of the book that the movie, Mary Poppins, is based on:
And some stills from 50 years ago:
Lastly, as I say every time I explain why I love to own my own copy of a movie, it is the Special Features, and this collection is chock full of them!

I love these extras!
I was so unbelievably surprised that this was maybe Disney’s most under-promoted home video release. And, it would have been the perfect tie-in to their latest theatrical release, ‘Saving Mr. Banks”! No TV commercials for it, no bonus tie-in products in the store with purchase, like they would ususally do with exclusives in Walmart, Target, and Best Buy. I still can’t figure it out!
Did not know it was out. One of my favorites as a child. Would make a nice stocking stuffer
