“Fandral the Dashing is a Marvel Comics character and a charter member of the Warriors Three, a trio of Asgardian adventurers consisting of Fandral, Hogun the Grim, and Volstagg the Valiant. They are members of the supporting cast in Marvel’s Thor comics and usually provide comic relief and side-adventures. Writer Stan Lee based Fandral on the public persona of actor Errol Flynn.”
Zachary Levi, our last Thor interview. For full disclosure, my neighbors are good friends with Zach. I brought that up in the interview and he responded by saying he had seen that tweet that I had sent where I mentioned that. I was pretty psyched that he had read my tweet and remembered it!
Zachary Levi was so comfortable and funny! I honestly did not know much of his work before this, except for Flynn Rider from Tangled! I will be happily catching up on his Chuck series in the coming weeks.
We immediately jumped in and talked about any injuries he might have incurred while filming Thor: The Dark World. He said his physical work was nowhere near that of Chris’s, but he did slam his finger in his trailer!
Some fascinating information that I learned is that they asked Zachary to be in the first movie. He could not because of his Chuck schedule. Josh Dallas took on the role. Josh was then busy with Once Upon a Time, and now Zachary was able to take on the role in this movie. We asked, how does it feel to take over someone else’s role? He said he was greeted so warmly by Chris the first day, and then by everyone that he never felt funny, plus the fact that he was going to have the role, and then didn’t, and was then able to schedule, it seemed to make things come full circle.
And of course, we had to know, was there some Flynn Rider in Fandral? ” Yeah, you know, you bring a little bit of yourself to every role you do. And I think that, it’s really just kind of a matter of like, these dials of, is this a charming character, is it not, is he a loyal character, is he not, is he trust worthy, is he loving, is he menacing, is he strong, is he weak, is he nerdy. I mean, I feel like I’ve played my share of nerdy characters, and that’s an easy dial for me.”
In a room full of Disney fans we did have to step away from this movie and ask about Tangled: “Flynn Rider was a dream come true. I mean, I grew up doing nothing but watching Disney cartoons and movies, and particularly musicals, and loving all of them, and dreaming about getting to do just that. So the fact, what was interesting is when I first auditioned for Flynn Rider, he was English, he had a British accent. I don’t know if that was more that they were still kind of deciding, is he going to have a British accent or not. So there was definitely, that the original Flynn Rider and Fandral the Dashing are much more similar than people realize. And then, Flynn ended up becoming much more my own kind of intonation voice. And, Fandral was just incredible, there’s a parallel in the charm, I think, with the two of them. But Fandral is very much more British. Well he’s Asgardean, but they all speak with British accents. So I don’t know. So Bris-Gardian, I don’t know what that would be. Very Errol Flynn and swashbuckling.” Just like Stan Lee wrote it!
The conversation continued about comic book worlds. He stated: “the mutants were always kind of like, to me the most relatable. Because you felt like as a kid, you thought, well maybe I have that in me it just hasn’t manifested yet. You know what I mean? Like I can get to a place and eventually I’ll realize, I am super human and this’ll be great. Thor is a very unique Marvel character, he’s actually unique amongst all the comics books, because he’s not somebody who was a regular guy who was thrust into extraordinary situations.” Yes, he was a God! But I can relate to growing up hoping to find out that I might have super powers at a later age!
We then took another Tangled break, someone asked how it was to sing the Tangled song at the Oscars. Nerve racking and horrifying was the response. And thrilled, when it was done!
Zachary shared how it was to be on Chuck , and if he did Kung-Fu it would be a nerdy version of Kung-Fu. But Fandral was a bit of a scoundrel with the ladies, not a nerd at all. And that’s where good acting comes in. Zach shared that some of the tweets he saw said that folks did not realize that it was he in the role of Fandral. That’s how he knew when he really pulled it off, he did such a good job people did not recognize “Chuck” in the Thor movie, he had taken his acting into another sphere.
And then he caught up with Josh and Ginnifer at Comic-Con and they had a good laugh at how each was replacing the other in the the Thor movies! No hard feelings between them. Zach said since he as taking over the role his only goal was to do right by the movie. I say he did.
Zach was absolutely charming to sit and chat with! And like the 2 Thor interviews before him, when we were told there was only time for 1 more question, just as Tom and Jaimie had done earlier in the night, he said he would go quick and squeeze all the rest in. These folks were headed to the red carpet premiere and their generosity with us just hours before that spectacle, was much appreciated.
This day of interviews, red carpet walks, and then the Premiere of Thor: The Dark World was magical!
Marvel’s “Thor: The Dark World” continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s “Thor” and “Marvel’s The Avengers,” Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. To defeat an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor sets upon his most dangerous and personal journey yet, forced into an alliance with the treacherous Loki to save not only his people and those he loves…but our universe itself.

I was such a big fan of Zachary Levi’s, when he played the title character on the NBC-TV action-adventure/comedy, “Chuck’. One of the best TV series of ALL time! If you missed it, you have to get the sets and check it out. He is so incredibly funny, humble, appreciative, and talented. I was so happy he got a part in a big movie like this. I hope he lands back on the small screen soon, though, so we can see even more of him!
