“The world of Cars takes flight in Planes, Disney’s high-flying animated comedy revved up with action and adventure. Join Dusty, a crop duster with sky-high dreams and a once-in-a- lifetime chance to take on the world’s fastest flyers in the greatest air race ever. Dusty has a huge heart but two big problems…he’s not exactly built for speed, plus he’s afraid of heights. His courage is put to the ultimate test as this unlikely hero aims higher than he ever imagined. With a little help from his friends, Dusty finds the courage to be more than he was built for—and the inspiration to soar.”
This movie was originally made to go straight to DVD but the studios knew it would be a big ht in the theaters, and they were right! So now, after a great run in the theaters, the video comes out today, November 19th!
Truth be told, we did not see this in the theaters. I thought it was too juvenile for my 10 1/2 year old. Well, we received a promotional copy and saw the movie in the comfort of our own home, and more importantly than my son, my spouse loved the movie! And he rarely gives anything a good review. My son also loved it, he always falls for funny characters and great adventures, he can’t help himself.
I appreciate any animated film with a good sense of humor to keep the adults happy as well. I love the creativity and the humor in having tractors represent cows, non only in the early scenes where it looks like some cow tipping has occurred form the sharp winds caused by Dusty, but also in India re presenting the sacred cow in the Hindu religion! That was hysterical! Again, this type of humor is brilliant to me!
I explained to my son the research that went into the movie. I told him their were set visits to an actual navy ship to see how planes landed and too off. I told him how some folks went tot he Taj Mahal in India to research certain cultural aspects there to make the movie as authentic as possible. He was intrigued by all that went into this movie (and every Disney movie of course!
And then there’s El Chupacabra. We enjoyed a great laugh together as I explained his Mexican Planes character was made to partially resemble a Mexican wrestler. So my son knew what I meant and said, Oh yeah, he is wearing a mask like Rey Mysterio! We look forward to the possibility of him getting his own show one day!
It is not an atypical story to have the underdog win and everyone live happily ever after. But it is how the writers take you to that conclusion that makes for an enjoyable movie experience, and in Planes, that has absolutely been accomplished! We had a great Saturday movie night!

I saw this in the theater with my 4 year old. Secretly, I wanted to see it more than she did but she ended up loving it…and kept asking me why there weren’t more girl planes!

I had no idea that Planes was originally slated to be a direct to DVD release. That just shows that Disney really puts their all into everything they do.

I thought Teri Hatcher’s part was cute. She did a really good job. I also liked the voice-over work she did in the spooky family film, Coraline!
