DreamWorks Pictures’“Delivery Man” stars Vince Vaughn as affable underachiever David Wozniak, whose anonymous donations to a fertility clinic 20 years earlier resulted in 533 children. David must now embark on a journey that leads him to discover not only his true self but also the father that he could become.
A DreamWorks Pictures and Reliance Entertainment presentation, the film is written for the screen and directed by Ken Scott, based on “Starbuck,” the original screenplay written by Ken Scott and Martin Petit, and also stars Chris Pratt and Cobie Smulders. “Delivery Man” is produced by André Rouleau and executive produced by Ray Angelic, Scott Mednick and Mark Sourian.
Cobie arrived first, Chris was late (LA traffic!) and his wife tweeted us. We were a little excited to see the hashtag from our event used by Anna Faris!
These poor folks inundated with questions from the bloggers:
Similarly to our Thor interviews, we were chatting with Cobie Smulders and Chris Pratt a mere 2 1/2 hours before their red carpet walk for the Premiere of Delivery Man. I still can’t believe how lucky we all were to be able to interview these celebrities, let alone so close to their Premiere!
I had the good fortune to have sat with some NY bloggers one year earlier where we met Cobie on the film set on East 44th Street. She was sitting in the truck with Vince filming a scene and she shared some time with us. That information is here.
Cobie shared that she had just had a baby when the filming for this movie started, she remembered what it was like to be pregnant, “I remember just crazy emotions that come into play when you’re pregnant and I think that one of the things that I know I crave and I think that pregnant women do crave is stability. You know, you’re in this situation, where especially if it’s your first child, a lot of things are unknown and in terms of this movie, the character of Emma, she has a very unreliable partner so she’s just sort of trying to figure all that out.” Yes, Vince character is extremely child like and unreliable. It is his journey into the responsibilities of adulthood that really turn things around in the end.
And the theme that affected me was summed up by Cobie, “I mean this movie is really all about parenting. It’s all about what it takes to be a parent so I, I automatically connected with that.” For me the parenting theme of the movie is what moved me to tears at points, it is so well illustrated through the journey of Cobie and Vince’s characters.
Cobie Smulders and Chris Pratt do not share a scene together in the movie! Chris plays Vince’s best friend and lawyer in the movie. He is also the father of several children and has many funny moments where he shows the very difficult side of trying to parent. I loved the evening scene below when Chris tells his kids, one by one, not to go into the sand box. It is past bedtime, and of course, one by one, they defy him and lay down in the sand box. As a parent, watching your kid lie down in a sand box is one of my biggest nightmares!
Chris had to gain weight for the movie. The Director wanted his character to be chubby, “I saw the original movie. The actor who played my role in the original, really brilliant actor, and part of the charm was that he was a bit of a bigger guy and I was like, this is really great. It’s a role where I can gain a lot of weight and I’ve always wanted to do that. I’ve done it before once and I really wanted to do it again and see if I could really push it this time and so I did it. Everything you think, you know, minus any guilt. It was really great.” Chris gained between 60-70 pounds for the role, I guess us husky guys are seen as more affable characters!
Cobie and Chris were both asked the same question, how was it to work with Vince Vaughn:
Cobie: “I loved working with Vince. He is so — I think he’s everything that you would kind of expect him to be. Super funny, super quick. Going into this movie I was very intimidated because, you know, he’s sort of known for his amazing improv and I am very rusty and so when I came to this film and met him, he was so supportive and he was very considerate and very charming. Like he really goes out of his way to put everyone at ease on set and set the tone for everybody so it was pretty great.”
Chris: “I feel the same thing. I mean he’s beloved by people, his fans and people because he just seems real. You know, he seems like a regular guy and I think that he’s everything you would really hope that he would if you’re a fan of his. He’s not like some Hollywood A hole. He’s no nonsense when it comes down to doing work. He does work and makes sure everyone around him does good work and that’s important as the captain of the ship. But at the same time, charming, caring and, he’s polite. He’s polite to everyone from the people who are his wait staff at restaurants to fans and strangers on the street who approach him, who like him. He always gives a little bit of himself to people, so he’s really everything you’d hope he would be.”
You can see how well Cobie and Chris play off of Vince in the movie, so the above quotes are not just conversation for the press.
Lastly, I loved Chris Pratt’s character! He had a lot of opportunities to show off his comedic talent, from wearing a suit that did not quite fit, to advising Vince on what it is like to be a father of several children. You of course have to see the movie, but there are a lot of funny scenes between the two, my favorite being at the end. You will understand what I mean when you see the movie!
