From DreamWorks Pictures comes “Delivery Man”, the story of David Wozniak, whose life is turned upside down when he finds out that he fathered 533 children through sperm donations he made twenty years earlier. He also finds out his ex-girlfriend is pregnant with his child. If that is not enough to contend with, 142 of the children he fathered sue to find out his identity. This movie is all about his journey of self discovery and how an immature man will grow into the role of adulthood and maturity at the age of 42!
This is Ken Scott’s movie. Delivery Man is a remake of Ken Scott’s 2012 movie, Starbuck, a Canadian film. He remade his own film for the American market, and we wanted to know why! The mom/dad bloggers interviewed Mr. Scott on the set of this movie in November, 2012. We asked about the history of the movie and why he felt an American version could be done so soon after the foreign original:
“There’s very little examples of this, of a director re-doing his own movie. We had the chance to actually see the original Canadian movie with an American audience, because we went to different festivals here. We went to the Palm Springs Film Festival where the movie won the Audience Award. It also won the Audience Award at the Sonoma Film Festival, at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.”
As a foreign film it would not get the wide distribution that it would receive as an American remake, and the humor content seemed like a prefect fit for the American audience where sperm donation and surrogacy, etc. have become quite commonplace. “It seemed like a perfect fit for the American culture.”
Mr. Scott explained the importance he put upon the staff to bring something new to this American remake. Copying the first movie would not work, it would not be original:
“Basically I tried to forget the other movie and just go through the same process. And sometimes going through the same process you end up exactly at the same place, but at least you know why you’re there. And it feels the same thing and it feels real. So that’s, that’s the way I went through the whole process of redoing the movie.”
And of course, we had to know why New York City for the remake. Well, where else could it be fathomable that a sperm donor could be responsible for over 500 children? And you can get very creative when you have half siblings all over the 5 boroughs! How will the half sibling from the Bronx compare to the half sibling in Manhattan? A lot of comic fodder there!
Ken said that he thought Vince Vaughn was the prefect candidate for the role of the sperm donor, new dad to be. His drama and comedy background matched well with the subject matter which is also both funny and dramatic, after all this is about people’s lives and the quest for their birth dad. Give a man over 500 kids and that is a comedy that could practically write itself!
