Cobie Smulders plays the ex-girlfriend of a 40 something man child, played by Vince Vaughn, in Delivery Man. I say man child because the character is immature even though he is in his early 40’s. He is also about to become a dad as Cobie’s character is pregnant. He then finds out that he has fathered over 500 children 20 years earlier from all the generous sperm donations he had made. The mom of his soon to be born child will of course get swept up in the ensuing drama!
It was a very exciting day last November, we got to meet with Cobie, right in the streets of NYC where the movie was filming at the time:
Cobie’s character is a pregnant, soon to be mom and a police woman in this movie and we asked her about how she did research for the role, she said she found 2 great folks to guide her:
“I met this guy when I was doing press for another movie and he works at the 34th Street Precinct. He said you know what, just come in and look around and talk to some people. He was super sweet. Took me around and then I also met a woman who was a single mom. And that was really interesting because it’s possibly like the hardest job to be a single mom.”
Combine the hardest job of motherhood with the long, irregular hours of being a police officer and you have a great set-up for a frustrating situation. Add to that your baby’s birth father who behaves like a child himself. Not an easy life to juggle.
We also asked abut the difference of filming for a TV show vs. filming a movie:
“I’m lucky enough to work on a sitcom which is a job unto itself where it’s the best schedule you could ask for. It’s really like, you know, as normal a job as you can have in acting. It’s a nine to five kind of a job.” Also the live action filming on the streets vs. on a TV set are very different, and moves much faster she shared. Great to here directly from someone in the industry!
And of course, the NY question:
“I love shooting in New York. I shot another movie here over the summer and it just, it’s very realistic. I mean like people are walking by and trying to get to their jobs and it, it gives like… New York itself is a, New York’s a character unto itself. It always provides such a beautiful backdrop and it also gives energy to the movie as well.”
I love to hear everyone’s perspective about filming in the streets that I call home. NY is almost the other unspoken actor in the movie, you can only control so much when you are not on a closed movie set, you are in the wide open streets with people running to and from work and errands when you are filming here!
Of course we had to ask about the Avenger’s. Cobie shared that being a police woman in this movie was sort of like a half way point in regards to this characters job, and her character in the Avenger’s, but clearly one was fantasy and this movie is reality based, certainly that is a huge difference!
And everyone agrees, the premise of the movie is a great set up for a lot of comedy! DELIVERY MAN releases in theaters on November 22nd!
