We got married in NY State 1 year ago. As far as I am concerned, it meant close to nothing. Why? Because if you have already been living together for 20 years and have been raising a child for 9 of those, a piece of paper does not make you married. Your behavior, attitude, and commitment, do. A License from your state does not make a difference as far as I am concerned.
The United States Supreme Court changed that earlier this year. Granting gay people equal marriage rights in America did make a difference in my heart. It actually made me come all the way out of the closet and freer to tell everyone that I was married to a man, I did feel legitimized by that ruling. I was also thrilled that as a stay at home dad I could now get my spouse’s social security benefits like every other married couple in America. Yes, in many respects I felt a little bit safer. It was also nice to let our child know his family was 100% legitimate in America.
And then came the call to the accountant! Can we refile our taxes? Yes! He thought.
So we planned our Labor Day vacation. We ran out of time to plan a trip to Europe, so we tried to figure out where we could go for 10 days, and Walt Disney World seemed like the next choice! We had been 3 times on business, but never just for ourselves, without being on someone else’s time frame. Not that being on Disney’s time frame is a negative thing, we just wanted to make sure we covered as much of Walt Disney World as possible!
So, we spent our new income tax refund on our trip. We supported the airline industry, the Disney Parks, the food industry, and everything else associated with travel, from cabs, to car services, to the local Orlando supermarket.
And best of all, Walt Disney World treated us as an American married couple, with dignity and respect and honor!

Awesome! What a fun way to spend your 1 year anniversary 🙂
What a fantastic way to spend your official tax refund. May the two of you have many more magical years together. Hoping to see all of you one day soon.
That is AWESOME!!! And I know you had a BLAST on your trip! Followed the pics!
Happy Anniversary!
Happy for you guys!! I bet it was a blast!!!
Happy anniversary! It was great hanging out with you and Peter last December. I can echo that “no on someone else’s time” sentiment. It’s great being invited by Disney to go there and cover things, but going there on your own to have fun with your family is a completely different kind of fun!
Congrats again.
Happy Anniversary. The day the supreme court ruled. I cried. It ment all friends and my family members were finally able to be treated like my husband and I. It was a day america made us proud.
Happy Anniversary. What a great way to spend your anniversary!! Loved seeing the photos.
Happy 1st anniversary and many more!! Disney is such a great place to spend your special time!
Happy one year anniversary sounds like a great way to celebrate and enjoy some family time.
How cool! I can just imagine all the fun you had at Mickey’s land!
That’s really great Mitch. Congrats on 1 year! Well, should I say 21 years?! I love Disney for seeing everyone as equals. I enjoyed following you and your family along on your vaca to Disney World via IG, Twitter, and FB. Looks like you all had a great time.
Congrats – and Happy Anniversary!
Congratulations on celebrating your first anniversary with a license! It has been so fabulous to spend time with you and your family at Disney that I loved that you chose to spend your tax refund on another trip so I could live vicariously through your pictures!
Happy Anniversary! I wish my spouse and i could take off for an anniversary like that. Seriously I bet you had an amazing time! And even better taking your own time to explore and enjoy! I like sponsored trips, but there is just something so nice about being on your own time table that is much more relaxing.
And a belated “Happy Anniversary” ♥
What an awesome place to spend your anniversary! Congrats!
Congratulations and happy anniversary! We just celebrated our anniversary there too!
