Some leading dog food brands add ingredients that don’t necessarily contribute to a dog’s health and well being, as I shall illustrate in this sponsored post. It is why IAMS recently announced its newest line of dog food – So Good! – made with 100% wholesome ingredients and no added sugars, dyes or artificial preservatives. Some leading dog food brands, like Pedigree, Beneful, Dog Chow and Kibbles ‘n Bits, may add things like Red Dye #40 or corn syrup, so IAMS, the leading pet food maker, is launching a national campaign and asking dog owners, “What’s Really in Your Bowl?”
“At IAMS we believe every pet and every owner deserves the very best nutrition at an affordable price; So Good! is a fantastic food dogs will love and their pet parents will love the lower cost too,” said Kristine Decker, marketing director for IAMS North America. “We want to give dog owners the facts about what ingredients are in some of the other leading brands so they can decide if they want added sugar, dyes or artificial preservatives in their dog’s bowl.”
I am currently in negotiations to get a dog. My son can literally cry on demand when he talks about his great desire to have a dog. He stops and pets every dog we pass, he hangs out in pet stores, and loves visiting the aunts and uncles that own dogs.
We find out next month what his 4th grade test scores are, and the deal is he must have achieved a certain score for us to get a dog. While I don’t look forward to the work that we all know will fall on my shoulders, I will be thrilled if he achieves the test scores we negotiated for, as this is what determines his middle school choices. I also suspect it will keep him calmer through the next few years which I am expecting to be quite stressful: the tween and teen years!
I was happy to get an education on the current dog food offerings since I might need the information next month. I was shocked to see this representation of what is in a lot of dog foods currently in the marketplace:
Dogs are color blind, so why do we need to feed them food that has food coloring, they can’t see how pretty it is, is that really necessary for dog owners? And corn syrup, which is something that I am angry is in so much of our foods: it is not allowed in foods in Europe, humans and dogs both do not need it added here in America!. I think this picture represents what the healthier alternative is for your dog:
I got to see first hand what choices there are for dog food and it seems to me to be fairly simple, healthy natural ingredients, or unhealthy additives. The ingredient listing on the packaging doesn’t lie so the pictures above clearly illustrate your choices.
And a famous chef was our host for the dog food chat, Chef Art Smith! He was a delight, talking about his love of all animals and his many pets. It was great to hear about his passion for animals and what goes in the foods that he feeds his own dogs. He was a pleasure to talk to and I wasn’t even going to mention that this put me within 1 degree of separation from Miss Oprah Winfrey (he was her personal chef)!

And lastly, our event ended and the crew moved over to Union Square to host an event for the dogs and owners of NYC!

Ok we have a dog and while Miss Cocoa Bean is a ton of work she’s sooooo worth it! Iams looks like they’ve got a dog’s food needs covered

I love the visual – really sends the idea home. I adopted two dogs about 2 weeks ago and when looking online at various dog foods and reading SO many opinions on what brands/types are good and which aren’t it is SO confusing! I love that IAMS is trying to make it clear what is (and is not!) in their dog food.

Great information, we’ve always used Iams, and then we switched a few years ago. After reading about all the food dyes, I think we’ll switch back. We have 3 dogs, so that’s a lot of chow. What kind of dog are you considering getting?
